Is there a Tasmanian who can help me out by storing a small child's kayak for a few weeks in February 2013?
I have built a kayak for a child between about 15kg and 25kg or about 4 to 10 years of age. It is 3.7 metres long and 450mm wide and weighs about 5.5kg.
I will be taking it to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart from 8th to 11th February. However I plan to spend a couple of weeks before and about a week after, mainly around the North East corner. I was hoping to avoid the necessity of taking the kayak off the top of the camper each night and the concern about security at night.
If there was someone vaguely near Hobart who could find space in their shed for a small kayak, that would save me the inconvenience involved in having it on the camper all the time.
This is what the kayak looks like with a 10yr old child aboard.

Thanks Justin.
Kingston looks like quite a convenient location.
Unless I get a better offer, I will leave it with you while I explore the east coast.

Very nice looking kayak BTW - you are a real craftsman.

It may be of no use but iam just out of Launceston and if you would prefer to leave it in the north you are more than welcome, i have plenty of room in the garage.![]()
Thanks for the offer. I will keep it in mind just in case something happens that means I can't follow through with Justin's offer.
I did originally think that somewhere in your corner of Tasmania would be more convenient, but I think a bit of backtracking will be inevitable regardless of where I store the kayak. Last time I was in Tasmania, I headed west from Devonport and spent most of the time on the west coast. I decided to leave other parts of Tasmania for another trip. So this time I hope to see a fair bit of the area on the east coast north of Hobart.
(I had to look up Googlemaps to see where Hadspen is.)

we are on the south esk river, lots of water activities in sumer with kayaks and jet ski's. A very pretty corner of the state but the problem with that is the next place you go to is just as good![]()
Wow, that looks amazing. I'll definitely be looking out for you at the festival
I've got 2 I made, stitch and glue only. Nothing like your's. I could also find some space if needed

Stitch and glue is the one common construction method I haven't tried yet.
Years ago, I built over fifty fibreglass kayaks and canoes as well as four moulds taken off some of those craft. Recently I have built nine strip built kayaks and two skin on frame kayaks.
I will probably have a go at S&G some day, but I still have a few strip built designs that I want to build.

Thanks to the generosity of Tasmanian members, I had several offers of places to store the kayak and I have somewhere to camp during the time the festival is on. Justinc will be minding the kayak and wrinklearthur is letting me stay at "Ranga Flat".
From some of the emails and PMs I have had, it is beginning to look as if the Wooden Boat Festival is becoming a bit of a gathering for Land Rover drivers, Trayon owners and kayak paddlers. If anyone else is interested in what LandyAndy described as "them timber constructed water going devices", my kayak will be in the Macquarie No 1 shed on the left hand side of the port area near Hunter Street.
With so many interesting activities organised for the festival, I can't promise to be there all the time, but if anyone else is going to be around, it might be an opportunity to match a few faces to AULRO usernames.
More information about the festival is available here.
