For interest I thought I would investigate the resale factor a bit closer.

I looked at a 2008 Prado GXL auto and compared it with an auto 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Both petrol models.

    Prado – Purchase price - $57812.00
    Jeep – Purchase price - $64990.00

Prado Trade in value - $29000.00 to $32600.
Jeep Trade in value - $29500 to $33100.

As I thought the Jeep loses more than the Prado but not as much as I may have thought.

Of course the “damned lies and statistics” aspect does not take into account the intangibles of pride of ownership/driving experience/performance/vehicle uniqueness etc. I would much rather drive a Grand Cherokee than a Prado and these ownership esoterics would more than make up for the the fiscal loss. The Jeep will have the "Wow" factor whereas the Prado will be somewhat like driving "Whitegoods".Money is important but it isn't everything.

I am not familiar with either the Prado or the Jeep, however, I am fairly familiar with the current Pajero. I have three MY11 Pajero's at work, all Manual TDs.

Although they were certainly capable in the limited offroading I've had to use them for work, the build quality is just awful. Everything squeaks, bumps and moves on the road, which has driven me up the wall on some longer trips. I have chosen to take my personal 1984 Range Rover on some jobs, rather than a work Pajero, as it is quiter and more comfortable to drive.

They must have a hard life as a mates is rock solid after 5 years,I personally don't like either vehicle, they both have that ''floaty'' front end feel Japanese vehicles have and they both burrow the nose under cornering but I'd have the Paj anyday. On the Jeep many ex Tojo owners are driving them and there are quite a few up here, quite a few go to Perth via a tilt tey but all up they are a nice drive. Having had all three model Prado's released in Australia (90, 120 and latest 150 series) - I'd never recommend a new Prado to anyone. The latest 150 series is by far the worst model that they've released.

I've had about 7 Prados now (all work vehicles and one of the main reason why in my own choice of vehicle, I'm on my third Disco). The 90 series Prado was by far the best for "off-road" capability. The 120 series is a great vehicle on long bitumen road trips and not too bad on dirt roads. The 150 has had a lot of issues so far and will continue to do so for some time yet. They're not bad on bitumen but have a cheap plastic feel to them and things often simply fall off. They are woeful on dirt roads and suck in dust around the back door like you wouldn't believe (we have six of these on one minesite and they are all the same).

Jeeps - can't comment on them as I've never had anything to do with them, but to me they still look like cheap. Pajero's I've similarly had nothing really to do with them, though I do know a lot of people who own them and have heard no really negative views on them. One bloke I know in Bunbury is on about his 4th and would not buy anything else - and he's no fool.

I'd still be looking at a Disco - you should be able to pick one up for considerably less than the number you have quoted. I did - though mine was a demo with 1,000km on the clock. It was also optioned up pretty well, so I reckon I got a pretty good deal.

Servicing - well what's a trip down to Perth once a year. There's no recognied service agent in Kalgoorlie any more either. That used to be a bad point against Landrover in my opinion, but with the service interval on the 2.7 TDV6 it really doesn't matter (especially as I now work in Perth and travel up & down in any case.

In my current job, I had the choice of a new Prado GXL supplied free to me as a company vehicle, for work and personal use - OR - I could take a "vehicle allowance" and supply my own vehicle (including paying for all running costs myself). Financially, the better deal for me would have been to take the Prado - but I bought a Disco.
    Cheers .........

I think the work Pajeros get treated quite gently, doing about 95% on-road kms and 5% gravel or cross country kms. As Army fleet cars, they get taken proper care of with maintenance / servicing.

That is why I think that the current model Pajero has poor build quality – there's no reason for my work cars to be as bad as they are!

Give your Wife 51% of the vote, ... as for the 49%, I'd go Pajero. Had an '89 diesel (Tradesman special...) till #1 son broke it for good. Most reliable car I've owned apart from my '67 Toyota Crown.

When I win Lotto, I'll put a late model Paj body on top of a RR chassis... Go anywhere - and return - in a more spacious, better-appointed body with working electrics....

Seriously, if you keep them for only 4 years, an extended warranty on a Jeep should see you through. Or, a Pajero and save yourself the co$t of buying extra warranty.

Yep im on the same opinion about the prado but the missus has some "thing" about it being good dont get me wrong our 08 model prado has been great. it's never broken down and is nice ish to drive. I just love all the tossers up here that think toyota is the best thing in the world
They are an avarage car and do a not to bad job.

But hey i dont need to convine you guys i need to get the missus singing the same tune.

if i could get a d4 diesel with some sort of front bar that's silver for a max of 65grand on road ill take it thanks

who do you deal with in perth for landrovers?

I'm a Landy nut through and through.

I really wanted a new Defender but the wife had a huge bonus check and got the 150 series Prado.

It's 2 years old now and 40,000kms and we have the regular fixed price servicing, check the tyre pressures and put fuel in it. That's it.

We have not had one problem. It's been offroad through the North west half a dozen times, Lots of beach driving and and a fair bit slow low range stuff.

I think it's only real downside is it's power to wieght ratio. I reckon its a bit sluggish. It is bloody comfortable and safe with its airbags etc.

Its not my dream 4wd but its a great vehicle. ( So is my 1974 series 3 )
