High performance cars and young drivers

wow rob a little bit serious there mate was a tongue and cheek post:D

however any car can be modified to get a lot fo power out of it, not insuring a car that has any modification from standard while on P plates would rule that out....

In the UK the insurance is soooo dam high and the fuel cost is so high teens cant afford to run high performance cars in fact most people cant until they are over the age of about 25 and still then you would be lucky to find people driving V8s:)

Sorry mate, just a bit close to the heart that's all :D:D The 240 wagon it the picture is very similar to my 240 that I had before I got my Disco.

I wonder what vehicle manufacturer pioneered the three point seat belt, was the first to fit one and generously did not patent the invention???;););)

I'm going to suggest another way of attacking the same problem. I too have spent numerous years attending MVAs and I always shudder when the pager says it's an MVA call.

Funnily enough I see these issues that we are discussing across the board when looking at age brackets. I really can't state that there is any over-representation of P platers compared to anyone else.

So my suggestions are:

1. To sit next to a learner (as a teacher) you must first sit and pass a road rules test first;
2. More unmarked police vehicles on the road in varying ages, not just new vehicles - preferably not anal retentive like some (there are some bloody good patrol police that I've met over the yearsBTW);
3. IF you lose your licence or cause an accident, you then have to attend a session with the accident investigation squad - trust me you look at some of their photo albums and it'll change your whole approach to driving; and
4. Instead of power/weight restrictions etc, I'd rather see a speed limiter fitted like what's fitted to trucks. Difference is I wouldn't just throw this at P platers, I'd throw it across the board. ALL vehicles speed limited to 110km/h unless exempted.

It all depends on what you call high powered. The bull**** remarks about "Dads V8" are uncalled for and ignorant. On this statement alone that rules out a V8 Disco or Rangie and they are hardly high powered. We also have a V8 Statesman and that is around 240 KW and I would hardly call that high powered. Why should my kids not be able to borrow that to go down to the shop? We also have a BMW 323i and I tell you what power to weight it would give the Statesman a good run. Also the crap comments about turbo cars rule out a lot of 4x4s etc.
It should be based on power to weight.
I am not saying for a minute young drivers should have high powered cars but it does come back to what your definition of high powered is. We also then come to the issue of them driving under powered cars.

Eh.. if we're going to speed limit all cars, let's set it at at least 130km/h seeing as there are such speed limited roads.

Alternatively, the Nissan GTR has GPS disabling of speed limiter if taken to a racetrack. Perhaps incorporate into cars and have limits based on the speed limit. Most GPS units have the limit for most roads.

Alternatively, this is all sounding way too nanny state. There needs to be a balance between Darwinism and keeping innocent people safe.

Nanny state re: speed limiters. I drive a semi everyday for work at the moment and I have NO issue with it being speed limited. Either does the public for some reason - maybe they might think different if they have to meet the same regulations I do.....

I too am a safe and courteous driver so I know how to drive around Volvo drivers.
