Sounds like fun to me!!
new years day driving back to Emerald from Gold Coast , Grumble developed some cooling problems due to a leaking hose which I attempted to repair but not good enough so couldnt pressurise the system so left lid off so water/coolant backblasted through collector tank when hot, so I had/purchased bottles to carry water and spent the whole day stopping and filling the system (about 30km max before temps rose too much). this was ok until Injune-Rolleston which was much further than my water would allow, so I propped about 100km short of Rolleston knowing I could travel further if I really had to. I spoke to some truckies and a lovely lady who sent messsages into Emerald to let then know my situation and to organise either water or a tow. You cant condemn the truckers as per an earlier thread.....these guys knew where I was and stayed in contact and actually pulled up to make sure I was ok....(I was still leapfrogging 30km at a time at this point) offered food and drinks.....it was getting dark and they called up to each other to let them know I was out there.....MUCH APPRECIATED YOU GUYS IF ANY OF YOU HAPPEN TO BE TRUCKERS.....until finally about 9pm my mate pulled up in the company hilux with water and a tow rope ...so we optioned for tow and I was towed 300km back to Emerald ...in the dark...with lights on Bruce....on a short rope. There are no pics, thankfully. So should I be ashamed? The hilux already at all up weight just did the job , easy , at 80kmh.
Yep, owning a disco is full of adventures, dramas and a combination of both.
Dennis's first story for 2013.....more to follow-over!
Sounds like fun to me!!
nahhh the fun stopped after about the third fillup, knowing that was going to be my day....
NO sounds like an adventure but probably would get annoying for that length of time.
Hope there's no lasting damage ? Modern Landy engines aren't exactly renowned for their ability to survive overtemp/lack of water.Fingers crossed.
You're right about the truckies though, sure there's a few dickheads but unfortunately there's a hell of a lot more 4WD 'ers who I'd put in this category before the truckies.
For a bit of light relief on the UHF, road info or assistance they're the pro's and are usually good value and tolerate the antics of the 'tourists' and other travellers well.
Whether it's shepherding groups of tourists and their caravans around their fully laden ore trucks whilst navigating the hills near Turkey Creek or helpful tolerance of a Disco slowly hauling a caravan with a 'jerried up' broken spring into Katherine, I've found the truckies to be a highly professional, tolerant and humerous bunch.![]()

As a driller I work away a fair bit and have had the odd, blown diff gear box etc. Glad to hear you got home OK. I know what it's like to waiting wondering.
I also drive low loaders with work and most truckies will help you out because it can also help them out if we all work together.
Each story like this helps me buy more bits for my 98 Deefa. SWMBO and I intend to do 3 very long trips and I keep buying replacement bits, like pullies, lift pumps, etc. I also intend to buy a full set of hoses and bigger radiator and intercooler. Each time i get asked why are you buying them if they are not broken. Each time I get to show her a new post like this.
Nobody got hurt but I guess your pride might be a bit dented. A broken hose can happen to any make or model of car. This for me is just a reminder of how big this island of ours is and how we have to be prepared when we drive around it.
Hope you did not do any damage.

Fellow driller here too Tonic. Dont you reckon everyone is like "landcruiser is the only way, it'll get you there and it'll get you home, they're the best" blah blah blah. I've had a terrible time with landcruisers in the remote parts that we drill. Had to walk 15kms once to the rig in the middle of a big red sand pit in WA. Stranded at the side of the road in searing summer heat for 8 hours! so yeah, it can happen to any car!![]()
its a td5, theres no damage , only to my pride not being aware before I left. if everything is working properly you should not be able to cook a td5 disco....it will shut the engine down before the temps get that high.
Yer mate, get that a bit, I do different drilling to you I think, smallish hydraulic rigs for blasting, some small down hole hammer for domestic water bores. Sounds like you might do exploration in those parts, rotary mud or big air.
We are looking toward small trucks now instead of 4x4. Cab over is a bit of a bugger for ride but they carry more. We tried F250 and 350, found they are really not made for off road Australia, but love the grunt.
If we could find a thing like the small Unimog we would go that way. I drive up to 10 different things a week, to me they are all the same. No maintenance and they die, too much electronics and they die.
There is no be all to end all in my mind. But I still believe there is no better off roader than a Landy.

I had the reverse kind of, my motorbike[much modified R75/6 bmw], after market "boyeur bransden" electronic ignition **** itself just outside Anakie and that was my trip over[i live in Brisbane], only trucks that went past were going the other way but they all stopped to check that i was okay and so did every car going past and leaving drinks etc when i declined there help[because i thought i could fix it]- good country folk. My nearest friend who is also a hilux driver lived in Gladstone and i had bought him dinner and drinks a few days earlier when i stayed at his place, I rang him and asked if he could pick me and the bike up[he was on his days off] to be told he wouldnt drive that far for anybody, needless to say he is no longer a mate.
At the end of the day your mate came through for you, you got home and from now on you should be carrying a few extra spares, in my 95 300tdi 110 i carry a spare water pump, lift pump and the fancy 3 piece radiator hose that i can chop if i have to. Life is an adventure-make the most it...
