I watched that doco on a QANTAS flight once. It is an amazing tale.

Interesing place Longreach with athe QANTAS Museum and Stockmans Hall of Fame, so easy to spend days there!
One thing that amazes me about it is the amount of tray back utes set up for roo harvesting!

when you drive into Longreach from Stonehenge you can see the 747 on and off for a bout a half hour.....I believe they lifted it onto plinths sometime back because it was sinking into the ground......

The Hall of Fame is closed because it has run out of money. Not enough visitors.

Pity. My late mother was a foundation member and donated memorabilia.

If you visit the Matilda Centre in Winton, look for the large wall photo of a Cobb and Co. coach with moustachioed driver standing near the front axle. That is my grandfather.

There was rail from Townsville to Winton early, and rail from Rockhampton to Longreach. The link between was not built until the 1920's. Before this the mail went by sea to Townsville and then rail to Winton and by mail contractor to Longreach. Townsville is closer than Rockhampton to Winton and Winton & district people still look to Townsville as the main city. The current highway follows the rail line and did not exist until after WW2. The original road was a teamster's road and followed the water points and the big stations of the era to the south and west of the current road. When my family last did the Winton-Longreach mail run there were around 250 people in the little settlements along the rail line. Now there are none. The state school at Evesleigh was mothballed last year when student numbers fell to one.
