    I reckon this was unfair

P Plater lost licence and fined for driving an old v8 range rover. Her boy friends family car & she didn't know it was a v8.

Paying the penalty for driving a Range Rover

More to the point, this happened in 2009. Is the SMH that hard up for stories to print it in 2013?????

    She didn't know it was a V8.
That sums up what is wrong with the licencing process IMHO - people should be educated a little bit on the variations in vehicles as well. Tramp your foot in a Micra and the result will be completely different than in an SS Commodore (or Range Rover for that matter )

It might seem unfair (and I do agree that the rules leave a bit to be desired) but rules are rules and ignorance is no excuse.

Besides, she'd previously lost her licence for driving a car with a turbo - you'd have thought she'd have learned to check these kinds of things.

Down here in Tas we don't have any rules about turbo'd or v8 vehicles...

But I got into plenty of trouble with just a beat up old corolla! Does it matter what you drive, or how you drive it?

But I do agree, rules are rules, in a state with rules like that, surely you'd always check if it was a turbo or a v8?

    Stupid girl...

The article has come about as NSW are finally going to change the ridiculous laws we have here re turbo and V8's for P platers to a power to weight ratio as used in Victoria.

The current laws have stayed for far too long, even though many have lobbied for years that they are unfair and illogical, where extremely safe cars such as compact Benz's are considered unsafe for inexperienced drivers as they may have a turbo or supercharged 4 cyl engine, yet have a lower power to weight ratio than a six cylinder Falcon or Commodore.

From what I've been told it was a case of the Mandarins over-ruling their political masters in a power play within the then RTA.
