Any Decent Recruitment Companies out there?

    Hello All Land Rover people,

I am wondering whether anyone has found a decent recruitment company which has actually found them a satisfactory job?

Last night I received an email from a recruitment company suggesting that there was a job I could apply for. So as requested I sent in my resume. This morning I receive word back that I am not a suitable candidate for the job - pardon me this is the second occurrence that your company has forwarded me a job and then after I applied for it told me I was unsuitable. Who sent the job to me in the first place .... you did!

On Monday I applied for a job from another recruitment company which specified a role as a Qualitative Researcher with NGO and Social Services background. I applied for the role as I am a Qualitative Researcher who worked as a Researcher with a NGO in the social services sphere. Lo and behold I get notification after contacting the same company twice - that I am unsuitable for the role. So the role asks for a Qualitative Researcher - I am a Qualitative Researcher - yet I am unsuitable for the role???? One is left wondering how these people get to maintain their own jobs?

Not happy Jan & dummy spit completed

    Kind Regards

you didn't see the fine print. Must be a male white protestant, under 40, Churchie or Brisbane Grammar old boy, minimum 15th degree Freemason, appropriate club membership, hobbies golf yachting rugby polo, good seat on a horse, live Ascot-Hamilton, married to St. Margaret's or BGGS old girl.

Anyway WTF is a qualitative researcher.

    G'day Brian,

While I can tick some of the boxes that you described in the list above, I fall down with all the finer points. Does being a member of AULRO apply as having the right club membership and also SLow?

As far as qualitative check this link out

I am actually a mixed methodology researcher - which means I can do both qualitative and quantitative research - I just prefer qualitative a lot more.

Maybe it is because I agree with this article

    G'day All,

Maybe it is because I have experienced what one Mr Noel Pearson wrote about and I can find little difference between the Job Services providers Noel mentions and with some recruitment consultants I have dealt with. Or maybe I am just a bitter and twisted sod and my attitude really sucks

Anyway this is what Mr Pearson wrote ...

UNEMPLOYED people have invisible bar codes tattooed on their foreheads. This makes them commodities in the employment services industry.

By the way my trip on this circus started when I was informed by an eye specialist that I had to leave my chosen vocation as a trade qualified Landscaper or I would go blind. So I retrained and I got a ticket and a bar code - Yep bitter and twisted or maybe I have progressed to twitter and bisted.

P.S I am not Indigenous however, what Noel Pearson wrote about applies beyond any colour barrier as far as employment agencies go.

    Lionel,

There are good & bad recruitment companies and then good and bad people working at these recruitment companies.
We work with a good company in Melbourne and the guy we deal with is excellent.

They get paid by results so it's in their best interest to put the best candidates forward but if you are 'on their books' they should already have your resume.
Not sure what the rate is but a few years ago they got paid 10% of the first years salary and for a sales role they manage to include the value of the company car, phone & laptop as part of the salary !
We've negotiated a better deal with the guy we use but he doesn't travel if we are recruiting in NSW. He does interview via the phone and weed out the people who do not meet the criteria we are looking for in a candidate.

I think you need to keep looking until you find a good person at a good company. Remember, they are working for you so go along and interview them if you're not happy look elsewhere.

    Best of luck,

If you are near a university, what about looking for a job as a research assistant?

Most of these are not formally advertised.

    G'day Isuzurover,

That is a good suggestion - I have worked as a research assistant at my current university. It took too much time away from finishing on my PhD. My research data kept dating rapidly so I bit the bullet in July 2012 to concentrate on wrapping it up. I will be submitting around April-May so I have started to look for jobs now. I am at the writeup stage where all I need is a power point for my laptop computer and internet access so I pretty transportable and can relocate for work now if something comes up.

    Kind Regards

    Another Example

    G'day All,

Here is another example - I applied for a role as a community officer in a town in Western Queensland which required "an understanding of the issues faced by people living in rural communities". I was born, educated and worked almost exclusively in rural communities. I even studied Farm Management Horticulture & Landscaping at Queensland Agricultural College. Yes I am showing my age there - it is now it is the University of Queensland - Gatton Campus.

The recruitment company contracted by the people offering the job were based in the city. To be eligible for the job I had to travel 5 hours one way to attend a face to face screening interview. They would not accept a Skype interview. This would have meant 10 hours on the road and an overnight stay somewhere in Brisbane. I know of people who cannot access specialist medical appointments because they cannot afford the cost of travel from the country towns where they live to the city where the specialists are based.

Due to my attitude problem I withdrew my application for the job. I am wondering if the original employer knew about how understanding the recruitment company they contracted was about issues in rural communities? Yep I am bitter and twisted.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Club membership should be among Royal Qld. Golf Club, Royal Qld. Yacht Squadron, Queensland Club, Brisbane Club, Polo Club, United Service Club. Membership of Leagues, RSL, Workers Clubs automatically disqualify you. Your mother lodge should be a fashionable one and you should have spent some time in Grand Lodge.

    G'day Brian,

Damn I am a member of the Bundaberg RSL Club. I am still a member of the Ainsle Football Club in Canberra from when I was working down there. I thought the Ainsle Footy club was pretty posh too .

I came back to Bundaberg after I was offered a job which was too good to be true so I came back home . Turns out the job was too good to be true.

I hope to be able use my membership at Ainsle before it runs out as I am applying for jobs back in Canberra again. Then again I am applying for jobs in Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
