You're right - it did. :D They covered the price of the replacement tyre, I paid for the trailer (I still got my use out of it after all), and I wrote off the inconvenience to experience. By the sounds of it they'll be having a few choice words with whoever they paid to give it a once-over. Seems fair all round.Quote:

When I pay good money for a supposedly serviceable item I dont expect wheel bearings to fail, spring retainer bolts to snap off, brake cables to fall out, loading ramp hinges to break welds and fall off, to be pulled over by the cops for towing an unregistered trailer, Parking brakes to be unservicable, the spare tyre to be the wrong pattern (maybe fair enough you get a holden 5 stud pattern when you need a ford but not a 4 stud rim when you have 5s on the road)
My personal favorite was when I lost a hired car trailer from behind the vehicle on the way to pick up the load. I mean yes, I may have been wrong for using non rated shackles and true, while it was unloaded my tow ball height may have been a little too high for optimal towing conditions but I cant see how either of those things would cause the A Frame to snap off of the front of the main body of the trailer.
To say I'm somewhat jaded towards trailer hire companies demonstrates mastery of the understatement.
I can see Daves point, I have had some shocking Hire tandems over the years to the point where I now just call for a trade tow.
Considering most tandems rent out at $120 per day these days and most tows are between $80 and $250 when you factor in time, fuel, wear and tear on the car and the sheer unknown I wont hire a tandem ever again.
Im looking for a Tandem or triaxle 7 x 18 skel this year for my own use, chuck a stock crate on it and it will pay for itself in a year.

If you hire a trailer, that you enter a contract into the hire of, you sign a contract that states you are responsible, for any punctures/damage, so therefore, if your were to leave a trailer, due to a puncture at a premises other than its rightful place, you would be held accountable and payable of all costs incurredQuote:

I don't understand why the vendetta against the trailer owner? I was going to prop one out the front Prior to the dude at the pub did, but speaking with a few local dudes that used to hire them, it was people such as yourself, why I never went ahead
What you're not accountable for is something thats unfit for purpose.
Blowouts (presuming the tyres were in roadworthy order, appropriately rated for the trailer), negligent damage, intentional damage, use beyond design limits you are accountable for.
Damage arising from poor maintenance isn't your problem on hire equipment.

Absolutely not. The whole point of hiring vs. purchasing is that the onus is on the person renting out the object, be it a trailer or a TV or whatever, to maintain the object properly, to get it certified where necessary, to keep it in good running order. My concern at the time (other than the immediate concern of going through the central divider attached to a three wheeled trailer) was with getting stuck with repair costs to the trailer hub, which there is no way I am responsible for, and there'd be no way in hell that I'd be paying. Me, I don't think I held a vendetta for the trailer owner, I think I was more than reasonable, and in this instance everyone walked away more or less happy. But like it or not, if you stick a trailer out for rent, be you a big business or someone with a trailer lying idle, you're responsible for its upkeep, and if an accident were to occur due to lack of upkeep, then you could be held responsible, which is fair, IMHO.Quote:
