    Talking Gotta love the country

we were just on our way home from a feed at the pub and a bloke with a little Ford softroader waves us down with a broken exhaust and holding a phone.

    "Are you ok ?"

"Yes, I just need to know the name of the town I just went through, is it Murra..."

"Yes, Murrurundi, but your about 10km south.."

"Oh Ok, so I'm still on The New England Highway ?"

"Yes, but you're in Blandford now, and you've just passed Timor Rd"

He repeats this to the NRMA lady.

I suddenly realise I recognise the voice on the phone Mr Broken Exhaust is holding.

"Robyn, is that you ? it's Vickie and Rick helping out, the poor bloke is just opposite and past the School, but not quite to Errol D*****s place"

By this time the bloke with the Ford is ****ing himself laughing.

Only in the country could you give directions like that and the person on the other end of the phone knows exactly where you are

I think what was cracking up Mr Broken Exhaust is that he waves over a random Patrol ute and the occupants just happen to know and recognise Mrs NRMA's voice and give good old country directions

Sort of reaffirms the old, 'everyone knows everyone else' in the bush

I've been involved in a situation similar, only it was a police officer's voice at the end of the phone I recognised - I'm not sure if my involvement made a difference or not, but the police probably arrived a lot quicker than they would have otherwise

Back in the early days when I was active with the rural fire brigade, one would hear over the radio something like " Fire is on Brubaker Creek Road, just past the Smith farm, near the bend by the pond." Everyone knew where that was.

I used to love the Territory before it also became a 'nanny' area with speed limits. When asking how long something took, it was always in beers.

Yeah that's a 6 pack. Nah that one's half a carton. etc etc.

Mt Isa to Burketown used to be a carton but a lot more if you got stuck at the Quamby pub on the way

I thought that directions in the bush always took the form, "Just a bit down the road from .....".

The problem is that "just a bit" can be anywhere between a few hundred metres to a few hundred kilometres.
