Speed camera regs

A little bit OT, but I grabbed some lunch at a large service area near Pakenham on Saturday.
There were a bunch of marked and unmarked highway patrol cars parked there with the guys having lunch inside.

They drove off at the same time I did, and the car i followed out onto the freeway was an unmarked commodore wagon with a faded carsales.com.au sticker on the back window. First time I've seen that as a camouflage.
Was all filled out and even had the phone number to call. Made me wonder if anyone's been busted for using their mobile and calling the number while driving behind..

People could just follow the road rules and not speed and they wouldn't have any problems. The speed limit is set for a reason. Cops and speed cameras should be hidden to catch the people who speed. People whinge about getting fined when they have broken the rules. It's simple really.

Yes. The reason a lot of the time would be to facilitate revenue raising.

You have a point - don't speed, won't get caught. But seriously, in hiding?

I'd rather see way more patrol cars DRIVING around so they create a presence, rather than effectively entrapping people in areas where there is no justification of them being.

I didn't whinge about the speed limit or exceeding it!
It's the personal safety risks that they expose themselves to in the course of their job!

I am all for more visible Police patrols. Unfortunately here in WA we need about an extra 2000 Police on the road. The government talks about how the Police will get another 500 people etc. That is roughly the equivalent of 1 more person per station and unit WA wide.... Traffic Police do a great job, it's no wonder they hand out tickets and speeding fines when they are the ones to turn up to someone who has been seriously injured or killed in a traffic accident all because the basic road rules were not followed.

Hiding = revenue raising. No other way of putting it or seeing it. As already mentioned, if they were serious, they would have a stronger VISIBLE presence. A cop hiding in the bushes will do nothing to slow me down, but a marked car or bike would. So I whizz past, get a ticket, then have a prang - Where is the detterent in that? Why not pull me over and book me? Only reason is they don't want people to slow down, they want to make more money. Remember that it used to be a 100kph zone through there, and they tend to hang around in places like this where speed limits have been reduced.

Take a local main road near my place. Used to be a 70 zone, then changed to a 60 zone, then a 50, then a permanent 40 zone past the school, which was later taken to a 40 during school times (no issues with that). The speed cameras were put there 2 days after the speed zone changed... They can never expect to be taken seriously when doing things like that...

Not that I have any real issues with speed zones in towns, I simply won't speed in town, but some places the speed zones really don't make any sense. Other roads I use have gone from 100 to 80 for no reason - there are no driveways or other roads for KM, and they are in good condition, but now speed cameras sit there... WTF?

Oh, and before you say they are there because of a high accident rate, the two spots I have mentioned I asked Vicroads for accident rates on those stretches - they both had a lower than average accident rate, BEFORE the zone was changed.

I'll leave it at that - while they keep making dumb decisions about these things, they will never be seen as 'safety' cameras, just 'revenue' cameras.

And I'm not whining about getting any fines - they have to catch me first. :twisted: - and I have all my points on my licence.

And if it's anything like NSW, they lose more senior Police than they can graduate from the Academy in the same timeframe. So the 500 extra Police never gets filled. But it's always a good platform at election time.

Just before Christmas when they usually have there big revenue raisers i spotted this near work.It was on Center Dandenong Rd right besides the Moorabbin airport.This picture shows a SPEED CAMERA half on the grass and half on a footpath.NOW this cant be legal can it? He was there for a few hours as well!

Now prior to this photo being taken,he was parked right across the footpath blocking it off completely.When i came back past it about 20 min later there was a cop car parked behind him.He was obviously told to move across.But clearly he is still on the footpath.I drive past here at least 7-8 times a day and there is always bike riders or people walking along there.

How is it that they are able to get away with this?I thought about emailing this pic to a newspaper to see there response.:D

Yep. Got all my points too.
I don't speed but it doesn't stop me getting pulled over, by unmarked cars.
You see, I have an old Commodore. It's the most reliable car I've had so I'm hanging on to it.
It's also "the hoon car of choice".
When I get out and walk up to the car with flashing lights, I say "What's the problem?"
For a moment, the occupants seem a little confused with this grumpy old bastard asking the questions. Then they say "Licence Check."
I reckon I have the most checked licence round these parts.
After a while, the polite ones say "Thankyou Mr. Marsh.", hand me my licence back and wait until I'm mobile before they pull out. Sometimes I have waited quite a while before I start the car, but they wait longer.
But I digress.

Oh, by the way, don't ask them "Shouldn't you be catching criminals?" They don't like it.

They are run by a private company. Serco, I think. Might be Tennex.
They are parked where it is clearly illegal to park. I would even say it is a road hazzard and dangerous.
Proof it is about revenue raising and not about safety.
Oh, anyone caught speeding by that camera, deserves a fine. That one sticks out like dogs proverbials.
