Did I mention I don't really watch car racing ? :D
(Ok, I turned on Channel 7 about ten minutes ago )
New series (COTF) run a trans-axle, so quick roll centre adjustments would not be as simple I would imagine.
Although I haven't seen how they mount the wishbones up, whether it's to a subframe or directly to the trans case as in an openwheeler/sportscar.
OK, just saw a graphic and the lower wishbones aren't mounted to the trans case.
Whether the mounting point is stipulated or there is a tolerance, I don't know.
It would make sense to give them a tolerance so they can change the RC position track to track and session to session.
FWIW I haven't been near a racetrack or racecar workshop for over thirteen years now and don't really miss it. It seems like another lifetime. (and I had to work how long it was too :D)
It can be changed, just not on the go as in the old car.
The merc sounds so good as it runs a flat plane crank.
No, 180* crank throws instead of 90*.
Real racing V8's use 180* cranks :D
A 90* crank gives nicer natural balance, but a 180* crank gives even firing order for each bank so you can make use of the exhaust scavenging much better.
Ferrari road (and race) V8's have always used a 180* crank, as do famous race V8's like the Cosworth DFV.
The only way you can get the same exhaust scavenging with a 90* crank is to use 180* headers, and they're a nightmare to plumb.
I've seen it done on a Speedway car and anyone I know that's attempted say never again.
most of the holden engined f5000's of the '70's had flat plane cranks. They sounded awesome, someone still runs one at Murwillumba sprints . Frank Matich, John Walker, John Goss, Vern Schuppan, Warwick Brown, Alan Jones, Larry Perkins, Graham McRae, Frank Gardener, Chris Amon were just a few of the drivers in the fiercely competetive series. There has been nothing like it since.
