I don't doubt India is a fantastic place with plenty of vibrant people.
However I wouldn't feel particularly secure traveling there, particularly with my girlfriend.
Personally I'd love to visit Afghanistan as I think it's a fascinating place with an incredibly vibrant history, but I'm not about to put the people I love at risk for the sake of touring, not to that extent anyway.
Note that this isn't intended to be a criticism of India or it's people as a whole, just this particular one.

She'd be safe with you, but single white women can be at risk as they are considered 'easy'.
Having said that a friend travelled around by herself there for six months without a problem and she's bloody attractive.
If anyone got too close she just told them where to go.

SWMBO just returned from the south of the country with some friends and didn't have a problem, but they always made sure they had a 'buddy', ie. there were two when the girls went out and about without any of the fella's

Unfortunately rape seems to be common in India, especially against someone who is deemed an inferior caste. I've been there, back in the late 70's, early 80's. A land of contradictions, wonderful one minute, appalling the next. But that's India. By all means go there, it can be an enriching experience. ......Or you can come home thankful you live where you do. It's the real World, people, you don't get that on facebook, Bob

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Now that would be an adventure.
And Bob, I've had plenty of experience in the real world. I feel perfectly comfortable wandering around the streets of Hanoi by myself, and I felt perfectly comfortable in South Korea and Turkey. Plenty of eye opening moments but nothing that made me feel uncomfortable.

I let my daughter and her friend travel in Vietnam, on their own, South Korea is as safe as Japan, Turkey , as long as you steer clear of the border with Iraq, & the Kurdish problem, all good. And, indeed, these are the places you should go, only a fool puts themselves in harms way, Bob

    True enough, no doubt

I am sure many people will agree that there are plenty of exotic places worthy of visit, and I have had the privilege of doing so over many years. In fact, I am off to Zimbabwe and Mozambique again next week - both with enough paradoxes and horrors to last a lifetime for allcomers black, white or brindle.

Nevertheless, glad I don't live there too.

    Cheers
