Defender 90 Td5, 90 Tdci or Disco 3 V8 HSE
Sold the Hilux and can now get one pf the above. I drive home to airport 70km round trip once a week an maybe I do 10k a year.
I've heard the Tdci seems to have a lot of problems? Worried the Disco 3 could be expensive to maintain due to electronics and may date?
TD5 is less refined than TDci, heater, seals etc?
Thoughts?

Not sure about N.Z but in Oz the TD5 90 is more expensive used than a 110 with same year /k's as there where so few brought here. The td5 and puma have the same body and suspension just different interior, engine and bonnet. What you save on a D3/4 or puma you could spend on your td5 building it to what you want.

So you have about $8k difference between an 04 90 and the 05 D3. It comes down to personal preferences and your planned use. If you want a easy to park 2 person offroad machine(you can fit 4 inward facing seats in the rear) or a larger wagon that still has very good ability but can carry 6 other adults or a heap of stuff. Just to throw a spanner in you might as well compare a defender 110 to the disco as secondhand you will get more space for the same price as a 90 and its of a similar size to the D3 just taller(which is a pain at certain undercover carparks so check the height of any you use).

Yes, its basically take my boys to cricket, rugby, potter around the farm, get to the airport and back once a week truck. We live in the country, go to a small town where there are no multi-story parks and any serious family get aways with the boat in tow would in my wife's 2012 Pajero (DVD player for the kids). So a man's truck. I'm thinking it would be nice to have something newer than the Hilux too, rather than going 'backwards'. So the '08 Defender it is - I've got it down to $42k with 3 month warranty and option of 3 year warranty ($1500) at that point. I need an extra seat so there are at least 3 in the back and the dealer took a $1k off the price if he doesn't do it - must be able to pick one up from a wrecker or the UK cheaply. It doesn't have TC but does have ABS, which is probably a good thing as have heard the TC can be a nuisance at times. ARB diff-locks perhaps down the track?

Td5 all day long for me, it was designed for a Land Rover in the first place, has an awesome sound with the mid section muffler removed, both of which he Tdci were not! Even though they are ECU engines, they are still fixable by 'us' on the side of the road. I hear the Ford lumps are not..... Either way, you'll end with a Defender so win win!!!
