That's not what I have found in the towns that are built on mining in QLD. Done many a long stint in these towns that are only in the state there in because of the local mine employing most of the township. Hardly anyone resents the mining itself... It keeps there families in
Collinsville, Glenden, Baralaba, Emerald servicing 6 mine sites alone.

Exception being Blackwater... Never seen so many FIFO shanty towns in one place :( Subway, Mc Donalds etc. Tiny local population, everyone else is just FIFO or DIDO.

Well, I'm going the other way. Just dropped off the Fifo circuit. Gotta finish this swing and doing one more then done. Been based at Compass in Hedland and Redmont BHP. SWIMBO is over it, and I'm over all the ticking and flicking!! Compass has the alcohol and noise issues but not seen the hookers.. That said, I don't go looking!!! Redmont is great, quiet, clean and isolated. Will miss the top feeds here. As for the alcohol.... Can't touch it when on swing being an ESO! The only things Ill miss are the money and the Pilbara scenery. Ya can keep the rest!!

You should see your old place now - very different from the outside, but no shed, just the standard patio's and carports. The big miners forget that 75% of our time is spent at home so lifestyle is the clincher when it comes to residential living in mining towns. I am off to Port Hedland in a few weeks, same style housing, but more fish.

tank , there was a doco on one of the tv stations about 6 mts back saying that some mining companys are employing local indigenous peoples and training them up which could mean the end of fifo labour type people and drivers etc

bushrover, when u get to Hedland, throw a line in down at the jetty opposite the ore boats, we managed to pull Trevally, and Queenies in on hand lines bought from Target! AM though not PM. I'm up there from the 3rd to 18th so might c u there!

I'm native to the Emerald area, and believe me, the bulk of the *local* population arent working on the mines.... ****es me off no end when someone gets a job in the area and has no problem saying its a ****hole and a ****ing hick town....

If it's anything like Rockhampton it would be definitely ticking those boxes. Not all time but more frequent than I like.

Rockhampton has the 4Ts. Tattoos, takeaway, tigers and teenage pregnancy.
