If you haven't already, you MUST buy & read " MONASH , the outsider who won a War ", by Roland Perry. You will get a better understanding of your Grandfather, and no doubt, a better appreciiation of what they went thru. Monash was the best General in WW1. The updated edition contains new information from German Commanders, affirming the importance of the Battle of Amiens,in winning WW1, not bad for a German Jew, I'd say, Bob
