Our neighbour uses massive amounts of power running aircons and outside lights and various two-stroke motors, but once a year she fixes it all by turning some of it off for about an hour. That's fine, but one year she walked around to all our houses telling us to do the same thing!
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Earth Hour would only have a point it it were Earth Year or Earth Decade or Earth Century anything less is just warm and fuzzy moments where we can claim to be green and pat ourselves on the back. As was said Greenwashing.
I actually think that this is a pretty good idea (the pump up power thing, not the greenhour thing.)

generally things have an optimal efficiency, lets say for power plants its running at 80% load, why cant we have a massive accumulator (or a bunch of them) that whenever the required power output of a generation plant is under its optimal output the accumulator acts as a dummy load and when the plants require power out is too high the accumulator puts stuff back out of storage....

Because turbogenerator sets are designed to cope with "X" output, no extra

What happens in reality, is Hydro Peaking plants pump water "upstream" again when the market spot price is very low, enabling them to have more water in their damn for peak demand times, it helps to enable fluctuations in spot price at vulnerable time, especially if you own a bit of diversity in your peaking plants

I was under the impression that Earth Hour itself was not actually intended to save much power.

I thought its purpose was simply to get people thinking and talking about the need to save power and ways to do it.

In that case, it has been successful. People are talking about it on this forum and elsewhere and some people are thinking of ways they can reduce their power usage and their power bills.

Even people who rubbish the idea are helping Earth Hour to achieve its goal because it is keeping the subject of energy saving in the forefront of people's minds.

    Keep up the good work.

Totally agree, previous years I have mad my crew endure it to get them to start thinking about the power they consume.......I used to constantly walk around after them turning lights, tv's etc. I'm slowly winning

It is not about how much is saved in that hour or used in the hour following. It is about raising awareness.
