So had the 4b in for a servuce today. And got a call saying it needs a power steering fluid flush at a cost of $130.

Is it just me or does that sound strange?

Well I do mine like you do an Auto.
In this case suck out the reservoir with a syringe and bit of hose. refill with clean fluid , ditto and ditto.

So in other words its a rip off scam.

It cost $579 bucks for a service. I wonder what they do for that price? And it seems like if anything is needed like new break pads etc, it's just added onto that price. I wonder if it costs more to have the oil change and filter or if it's included!

Should have become a mechanic :banghead:

Services these days usually involves just the change of engine oil and filter.
These go for around $130 generic
If they changed the gearbox/ Auto Transfer case and both diffs oils then it could add up.

your invoice should show what they did.
Services don't usually include plugs or air filters, air filters are usually just blown clean if still serviceable. the servicem ay include a lick of tyre shine.

Why do you think most of us do our own services.

There is a bleed valve on the p/s box - drain & refill then bleed - less than $5 fluid.

Yer it really grinds my gears what they charge and what they do. I'll be reading the invoice when I pick it up. If the oil and filters is all they do, I can do that over a beer or two.

I guess when the dedender comes eveythig will be done in house.

They did an ecu update too. Will be surprised if I don't have to pay for that.

Sorry for the rant fellas, guess I just needed to express my hatred for large car companies.

I take it you are a "service technician"? If so what are your views on the flush?

    Really ?

It takes close to 4 litres to flush it properly.

    The involved procedure is.

Jack vehicle up and support front axle on chassis stands.

Remove power steering return hose from reservoir and cap inlet.
Insert tube into return hose and direct down into catch tin.

Start engine while someone pours fresh fluid into reservoir, cycle wheels to full lock each way several times and hold there momentarily while engine idles and offsider continues to pour fluid through system.

Shut down engine, reconnect hoses and restart engine, if any deadspots or noises/groans, bleed 'box,
On a Deefer/RRC or D1 that's at least 3 litres of fluid gone through, and hopefully any contaminants have been flushed away.

Or, they can hook it up to the ATF flush machine and do it that way.
Anything else, ie. just sucking the fluid out of the reservoir a couple of times is a waste of time.

Could have been worse as this lady almost got charged for a power steering flush on a vehicle that had electric assisted steering and no fluid
