Yeah, as I said, it all comes back to selling service and one's personality, like the Kotara business,go the extra mile project the personality,I regularly deal with my local Repco have for about 20 odd years, know most of the staff, but there are a couple who are better than the rest, they know me by voice,I will place an order they will source, give me a time, cost, then I will collect when it arrives.

    Cheers

a sale for the sake of a sale ain't always worth the effort

sounds like you don't get it...

and we know successive australian governments don't get it

these guys have to operate with in certain rules

    most of which you don't

but one day it is all going to come back and bite everyone unfortunately.

sooner rather than later, i suspect.
I beg to differ as there is a bike shop very close to me who had his parents put the money up for him to run the business and he has both internet with courier delivery and if you need it yesterday you come into the shop and pay a bit more but get it there and then.
He does get it and gets most of my business now and I can choose which way to go. The new way to go is downsize the shop and staff and put the staff into packing, internet sales processing and you get both worlds of business. They also will source hard to get parts for you from their suppliers overseas, mark it up and send it on to you.
This is the new style of business.

As a retail worker I see the problems of internet versus bricks and mortar all the time, however, if I could buy diesel on line and lived in Tasmania I most certainly would, since in Tas most of the service stations I came across are not only self serve but you have to feed a machine with your card, there isn't even an attendant to take your money and sell you lollypops any more.

Sparkdiscos reply made me remember going into a camera/electrical shop in Ceduna a few weeks ago.
I wanted to buy a new camera as mine had gone bung so I thought about 500 or so bucks should get me something reasonable.
One bloke was gobbing off on the phone to a mate and the other was printing labels for CDs.
Gobber off didn't even bother looking at me and the label printer looked and turned his back!
Not even an acknowledgement of my existence. Nice one fellas, you lost a small sale but more importantly I've told others about the lack of manners from the pair of you.
They may think they're BETTA but it ain't service they're BETTA at.

on the example that you put forward, you couldn't stay in business, simple fact of life, even if your working out of a cardboard box in dad's back yard on your own, it still doesn't add up.

This is exactly why I go to my local Opposite Lock.
They all know exactly who I am and always are up for a chat, even if we bump into each other on the streets, waves when passing on the roads, etc.
For example, I got my winch off tigerz. 12000lb, free hi-lift, total of about $600 to my door.
I could have gotten a better winch, with dyneema instead of steel cable, installed for a couple of hundred dollars more.
When my tigerz winch dies, three guesses where I'll be going.
They know my name, they're friendly and professional, and they're always prepared to give me a discount, even if sometimes I'm not eligible.
On the other hand our other 4WD store hasn't the foggiest who I am, despite having been in there more times than I can count, even spent some money in there.
Every time I go in there, same canned reply, when they finally acknowledge that you're even there.
Shocking service, add to that half the time they won't even acknowledge my vehicle exists in it's from factory state ( "Nah mate, isn't a 2.5 diesel in the disco" WTF).
I couldn't give a rats if they have "the best gear".
If you treat me like some sort of mentally challenged ATM, I'm not going to give you a cent of my money.
I"ll happily pay a bit more for good customer service.

Retail has changed - get over it and move with the times. Australia has been sooo slow off the mark. How many Australian retailers have websites that don't list prices or offer online sales? Shying away from competition... its nuts. The global market is accessible to all - start selling!

All this crap about sales people on shop floors loosing their job. You can have a retail store on the high street run by one person or it may require many employees... its the same with online shop operations. Warehouse duties, virtual help desks, developers for the websites and shopping systems, marketing, SEO, content writer, photographer.. etc etc... a successful online business will employ.

If you cannot beat the online retail movement, join it. Go virtual and lower your margins, compete on price and start selling again. Australian online retail will always have an advantage domestically. Next day delivery, reliable support and returns service. Convenience is king. People will pay more if they can get it quicker, and can return it without cost.

Yes I shop around online for the best price, BUT local results are the first port of call - the closer to me the better. If an Australian site has fair prices, I become a customer. In future I will go there first knowing I can checkout in 0.5 seconds, pick it up or have it delivered.. and save myself the google bother.

For the majority the shopping process starts online, if you have not got your products up and ready to sell then you don't exist!

For those left behind, retail is not changing - it has changed!

If australian retailers cant provide support and service in a shop front how are they going to provide support and service online?

As for next day delivery, I get stuff from overseas quicker than from the eastern states.
