that's quite a jump in price!
I too await an informed opinion on this, although out of curiosity not because I need the part!

Contact LR Direct, as they've been very helpful in the past for me. These days, Genuine Land Rover parts often seem to come from the same place as the aftermarket stuff. I've also found Bearmach to be pretty good. And is it worth going to a specialist like Ashcroft?
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

I would normally favour Bearmach over Britpart, but I'll contact and ask.
Ashcroft don't do a standard Salisbury ring and pinion, weird hey.

The origin of the part trumps the packaging every time.

All the major sellers supply parts as pattern, OEM and PR2 (or equivalent) and Genuine. Unless it's specified on most UK sites that it is either OEM(or a specific brand) or Genuine it will be a pattern part.

Other listings on LRDirect will show Britpart, Bearmach and Allmakes sourced pattern, OEM and Genuine pricing.

This is the listing for a Td5 cam cover gasket for example:

As you can see from above the pricing is pretty close for the same grade of part from all the major suppliers. The flipside of this is that if you see two parts from different suppliers that have significant differences in price they are unlikely to be the same "grade".

I personally steer clear of the "home brand replacement part" products. They might be ok but I haven't had good experiences in the past. Using the Td5 cam gaskets as an example the cheap pattern/replacement parts are usually have a poor fit/finish compared with OEM/PR2/"Premium Branded" or genuine.

    cheers

    Just a thought.....
KAM Differentials in England provide crown wheels and pinions of almost any ratio you need.
They also provide a fitting service, which means they have a number of good 'take-out' standard diffs going spare. I got them to change my diffs when I converted my Range Rover to a Dakar with much bigger wheels (3.5:1 to 4.1:1).
Is there anyone in Australia that offers a similar service that could supply you with standard diffs?
    Alternatively....

Not sure about here in Aus, but after re fitting a 320K gear set without a blemish I'll go new thanks. The originals kinda got a whine at 100km/h, and the cost of the refitting yet another one if another second hand one has a hummmmm would break my spirit.

interesting though. I wrongly bought a rover diff ring and pinion off Ashcroft for 110 pound. Stamped and made by them. But for some reason they don't do standard Sals, only modified.
KAM do a standard or modified Sal gear set for 195 pound.
Which raises he question again of some recent threads. Why do these middle men want 500 pound upwards for something they simply order in and on sell.
I guess it's a bit like the farmer and coles or woolies. Pitty we can't all find a farmer to buy off.

well KAM never replied so no sale for them.

    LRdirect replied....

    "Thank you for your enquiry.

I can confirm that the AEU1488 from Britpart is on OEM part, which means it is from the original equipment manufacturer.
This is not a Britpart own part, but a part that was made by the same people who make genuine parts for Land Rover."

So it seems Britpart win out this time. They some how have privy to supply OE manufactured product at reduced prices. While someone else wants 760 pound more for green and white labelling. Meanwhile Bearmack are left selling the ? product; perhaps also made by the same mob.

    the joys of marketing.

Lets hope the Britpart ring gear is not like the indicator I bought recently. It went straight in the bin as it was not worth drive back to get my $5 back.

Hard to say, i bought a ps pump not realising it was BP and had no issue with it in 8 years so it just depends where they source their parts - like any other supplier, LR included.

AFAIK Britpart are a repackager. That is, they order parts from a range of suppliers, and put them into Britpart boxes. Sometimes the supplier may be the OEM supplier, and other times may be the cheapest supplier.
It can be a bit of a lottery, so I take the advice of people like Mario and Heather, they've moved enough stuff over the years to have a handle on what's good and what's not.
