Drove it in a series 3, no real problems, we stuck to the main track. Tanami is local language for low bush, or similar. A fair bit of old gold mining stuff [ crushers etc] Heaps of wildflowers at the right time of year. No sand dunes that I saw. As a matter of fact, the locals drove 2WD falcons etc mostly, but there were quite a few wrecks on the side of the road. Now, if you can get permission to enter Kings Canyon from the northern escarpment, that was impressive , good photo op. Bob
Not sure of the tribal group, but Yeuendumu was a large aboriginal settlement on the track. A bit of a culture shock [ talking 1982] some living in houses, & some still in humpies, straight out of the bush apparently. Still fairly wild, spears & such, best not to hang around , at that time. Just remembered, tribal group Walpiri.

How come the support vehicle is not a Land Rover? Do you know something we don't
Yuendumu is the largest and most troubled aboriginal community in the Territory, a fuel stop there is still quite an eye-opener. I believe it was closed to outsiders for a while recently due to endemic violence, with an ongoing payback feud between two family groups. The sights on the Tanami Track (Road) are not much to put on paper, but it's one of those trips that you have to do.
Back in 1982, it was a real eye opener. I can't say much more than that. The police house at Papunya, another settlement we visited , had a huge fence, at least 10 metres tall, four huge dogs, totally wild mongrels, it was an accompanied posting, the security was for when the police officer had to leave, and his family were on their own. The Wives of these men had more courage than most men I know. [ I hope it was Papunya, & not Yeuendumu, after all these years ] Bob
not entirely sure but Im fairly confident that I need to restart the concept of a sarcasm font.....
