I knew Peter Brock very well...he was the same age as me, knew him when he had the A30...as many of you would know Peter had a long involvement with road safety, hense the .05 racing number.
Well, Peter wasn't a big fan of radar, speed cameras etc etc. He said the main attribute was "attitude"....his words, & I quote, "If you haven't got your brain in gear when you get behind the wheel, nothing will make any difference".

Yeah , we'll that says it all mate doesn't it? Anyone who does anything like the speed of that bike on a public road with other road users around certainly doesn't have his brain in gear does he? Rip Brocky......even he couldn't argue with a tree.....and that was on a road closed to the public during a sanctioned event.....the point being that our roads and environment are not designed for those sort of speeds......no one can argue Brocky was an exceptional driver, and he came unstuck.....so how long before the rest of the " it won't happen to me - I'm immortal" crowd become a statistic.....you guys hang **** on the coppers but we are the ones who clean up the mess and deal with the families after the event.....Quote:

TD50WA...I don't see anyone "hanging anything on coppers" (Your Words), who mostly do a very very good job, in sometimes very difficult, and unthanked, circumstances. Any reasonable person would know that.
What I will say again, though, is that speed limits in this Country are, in some places, too low. Here in Victoria, we have the Hume Highway...110 limit....Over the years, I've spoken to several Highway Patrol officers who have said, on several occasions, off the record of course, that it's easily safe for 130kph.
I drive a lot myself in Country Victoria...bullet straight roads, no-one around, yet I have to sit on 100Ks .....AND I DO, but I reckon it's unreasonable.
I ain't condoning 273ks either....that is simply ridiculous. Speed Limits?...Got no problems with them at all.....except that in some places, IMHO, they are too low.

The attitude of some of the young men and women scared me more than the data and information presented.
One wanted to argue with a presenter about the accuracy of data on stopping distances, suggesting his "Fully sick" Nissan/Subaru/Commodore V8 would easily stop in less than 10m from 60 or 80kph despite the scientific evidence saying it took say 60m. No amount of discussion would convince him that he was wrong, Unbelievable !!
Or the guy who was off the road for something like the next 10yrs because he had so many repeated speeding fines, but still insisted that he was a safe driver "cause like I can handle my car at 200+ kph", how he came to that conclusion was never explained, just that he believed it.
I do not care who you are or how good you think you are, on a public road there is absolutely no way you can suggest that speeds like that are acceptable.
Sorry for the rant but I just think your comment is fundamentally wrong !

Now these figures are highly conservative. The best cars are stopping from 100-0 in about 30m. That gives them a grip on the road of ~1.28.

Every "safety" related video or presentation I have seen on speed has been complete and utter bull**** from a physics perspective.
However, if you go to a racing driver training type presentation, they have it right.

Just remember... On a Dual carriageway doing 270km/h...
Assuming the other motorist in front (heading in your direction of travel) is doing 110km/h - Means you are closing on him at only 160km/h
When on single carriageways doing 110km/h (Most SA country roads for example and Highway 1) your closing speed is 220km/h...
