Irate police hunt 'missile moron' motorbike rider

For those out side of Victoria, there was a motor bike clocked at 273 kph on the weekend. One of today's headlines "Irate police hunt 'missile moron' motorbike rider".

Now I don't condone this, but it would be nice if the police could get a bit "Irate" about violence and bashings in the community, and devoted more time into these thugs.

As for the motor cyclist, due to it being on the Hume freeway, it was most unlikely that anyone other than himself would have been hurt.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

At that speed he would cut a commodore in half what if it was yours Remember Hwy cops only look after roads they don't look after assault and snobbery. Even if they weren't chasing him they would not be looking for anything else

    Angry

    Mr Whippy....COULD NOT AGREE MORE.
Obviously no-one condones these sorts of speeds, but the way the Police, AND THE POLIES, AND THE DO-GOODERS, go on about speed speed speed....is ridiculous.
Geez, headline news on the radio the other day was "driver clocked at 110 in an 80 zone", "124 in a 110 zone" etc etc etc......and more often than not, these things happen when there's not another car or a pedestrian within cooee.....it's just scaremongering.
On the other hand, these "idiots" in their clapped out rubbish heaps drag racing, doing burnouts in their unroadworthy pieces of sh.t, deserve everything they get.
But, like you said Mr Whippy, if we had this sort of concentration on other types of crime, we'd all be better off.
And I ain't having a go at the Police, on the job, in the Stations,...it's the bureaucrats, sensation seekers, do-gooders, that I'm having a go at.
    End of Rant...Pickles.

I am also not convinced by the blanket statement, "Speed kills".

However there is a difference between creeping a couple of km/h over the limit or even doing 110 in a 100 zone and riding at 273km/h.

The former is the the sort of thing that many drivers do accidentally. 273km/h really is moronic.

I agree. Strictly speaking speed does not kill, it is sudden and harsh deceleration that is the killer.

Queensland police are in the news this morning saying that they are going to lower the speed 'tolerance' Police Commissioner says leadfoot motorists in sights as state acts on `unacceptably high' road toll | News.com.au

The article clearly states that one in five road deaths is caused by speed, 59 deaths last year. Perhaps the other 80% of road deaths are worth targeting first?

This is what happens when speeding revenue starts to drop because more people are complying with the speed limits. They have to lower the tolerance to ensure revenue levels are held. If that doesn't work the next step is lowering speed limits to unreasonable levels, so more people "speed". I am pretty sure that would be a standard thing for any Australian government to do.

My problem is not so much the police being "irate" but the hypocracy involved.
This was a long time ago but I still remember.
When I was Motorcycle Sales and Marketing manager of BMW , I had a bit of contact with the police motorcyclists and can remember one drinking session when the guys were talking about coming back from a "convoy duty" in Ballarat. They were openly bench racing about doing 210 plus etc on normal roads.
Fast forward to a few months later when I accompanied the National Service Manager to Albury to inspect a dealer. He was a German, and once we got to Broadmeadows he put the foot down to 210Kmh in a 735 . we got to the Puckapunyal turnoff to find a Kandy car across the road who signalled us onto the island and told to wait.
15 minutes or so later an unmarked Corona pulled up, with outraged female and male police officers, who demanded to know what speed we were doing , to which the driver said"no comment" as we all should.

He then produced his International Driving Licence to their extreme discomfort/anger as they knew he would be long gone before they could get him to court.

My son's best friend is a Highway Patrol Officer who has ridden with my son at over 250Kmh in the past.

I see nothing wrong with going at Vmax on a Freeway which is by definition limited access, so the T boning a Commodore should not arise except from the stupidity of some other person. It's not good enough in those circumstances to say"oh if he wasn't sppeding it wouldn't happen, " as the accident would be a DIRECT result of some dork doing what he should not do.
The speed limits in australia are ludicrous and encourage stupidity and fast lane hogging by never enforcing the rules. Trucks in Australia are ill disciplined and overtake on hills where they become causes of accidents, although I must admit I was once surprised near Munich by a truck pulling out as I was doing 200 or so, and I ended up under the tray just before the barrier, so it happens there also.
As an example the M5 in Sydney was designed to be safe at 130Kmh, but the limit was lowered with the excuse of "noise abatement" , which is what RTA zealots use as an excuse to slow traffic to what they feel comfortable with as "statistics" made by police show slower is safer . Even the NSW government has recognised this is BS as only a couple of weeks ago they pointed out the vast gulf between the UK stats and NSW and talked about raising speed limits.
    Regards Philip A

As long as the increased revenue is used to repair the already over used and extremely poor condition of our Qld roads, and not into funding more pie in the sky schemes.

But I have got to admit my last trip to the Gold Coast Land Rover club meeting was interesting,it had me sitting in the left hand lane at 112 kph in the 100 kph zone and I was about to get out to see if the wheels were still turning! As everything was bolting past, and that was by the GPS as the cable driven speedo reads high on the D1 by 7kph and low in our RRC by 9 kph.

    cheers.

So many comments here I agree with. The only mistake the rider may have made was that there are a LOT of cameras along there, and the Police have said they will be reviewing all footage, so he or she may come unstuck yet...

They seem to be dropping speed limits all over the place around here at the moment. They have just made a 100 and 90KMH road bewteen 2 towns an 80 and 70KMH road, and had Cameras out in force THE NEXT DAY after the changes. How does the Gubment ever expect us to take their 'Safetly Camera' bull when they do something like this which is blatant revenue raising.

One of the reasons I don't ride so much now is the hype that surrounds speeding now - if this person made the news for not getting caught, what would be the outcome of someone getting caught - trial by media and worse.

What is worth noting is that we have one of the lowest road tolls in the world - about 5th lowest last time I looked, and only just behind the best in the world.

The road toll will never be as low as they want - 0. It just ain't going to happen while a human is behind the wheel/bars.

The next big push will be to reduce the drink driving limit to 0.00 and increase the legal dring age to 21. Don't laugh, this will happen within 5 years I think - most State Governments are well on the way and would do it tomorrow if they had the guts and knew they wouldn't loose an election over it.

Add to that a speed limit of 60 every where we go, and it would be quicker to go back to horse and cart.... may even be a bit cheaper too with the way fuel prices are heading...
