    Strange thread really.
My first post was about what I see as reported police hypocracy.
Most police I have met have been good guys who like doing the same things everyone does. And that includes some like riding powerful bikes fast. However you would never know this when they put on the stern ( and outraged) demeanor . Reminds me of when I knew a couple of KGB agents who were "comrade this and that" until the Soviet Union collapsed then they talked and acted normally.

The guy allegedly did the crime and may now do the time. He knew it was illegal and being 37 should just about be an adult.

It's the hysteria generated by maybe the police PR about "irate" and 'angry" that annoys me. And my personal experience has reinforced this.
This is part of the Victorian Government "conspiracy" to brainwash the public with propaganda that 1Kmh over the limit is reprehensible.

Haven't any police been overseas to Germany, Italy, Spain or elsewhere even Nevada ?
So if police are so outraged by speeding why aren't they also outraged by people who hog the right lane , trucks tailegating, travelling in convoys etc ?
    Regards Philip A

Want to reduce the road toll?
How about English style M.O.T. tests? (annual roadworthy).
An unsafe car is probably more dangerous than a low level speeder? Ever tried to stop a car with knackered shocks and crap brakes? Takes a bit longer than 5 kph over the limit!
As for the 'dodgy' over the phone tests, they seemed to dry up a fair bit when CO2 levels were introduced into the test and the machine cost upwards of £50k, all of a sudden, the backyard testers disappeared or were unwilling to run the risk.
Yes speeding is unsafe. People who drive unsafe cars are IMHO, worse. (273? Probably worse still!)

    Yes Rohan, I personally agree.
BUT apparently statistics show that in states that do not have annual roadworthies, the accident rate caused by car defects is no different than in NSW where there are tests.
But I often wonder whether police classify accidents which may have been primarily caused by say bald tyres, gone shocks, sloppy steering or failed brakes where no total breakage occurred as "excessive speed".
and indeed some accidents caused by road conditions.
This reminds me of a Motorcyclist memorial which is on the old Pacific Highway from Gosford going up "the hill" to the F3 entrance. I remember the day of the accident I drove up the hill and saw an enormous pothole in the middle of the corner. I will bet the police cited excessive speed when the poor guy was probably travelling quick but safely when he is suddenly confronted with an enormous pothole which was enough to send him into an unfortunately placed cement traffic barrier.

IMHO It probably is hard to prove a vehicle defect caused a crash unless there is something clear cut like the brakes totally failed with a disc pad popping out or the steering failed by a tie rod falling apart. I have seen the post crash exams on TV and they seem to concentrate on what still works after the crash, not how well they worked.

However there is something wrong in NSW anyway as there is an enormous difference in the percentage of accidents from "excessive speed" in NSW to those cited in UK . Something like 40% vs 16%.

Just walk around any shopping centre and start looking at the tyres on vehicles, particularly the fronts.

You would find heaps of accidents waiting to happen...

That would be a good start for the authorities

Something that's only been mentioned rather sparingly in this thread is attitude and education.
Yes, Germany has great roads and you can scream up and down them.
But, my understanding of the German license process is you start with something like 6 weeks of theory, and then you move on to driving in ALL conditions, including bad weather and the autobahn.
And you're not allowed to be taught by mum and dad.
It's all well and good to say "The roads can take it".
That's fine, but if the driver can't then you've got a big problem.
A lousy driver on a fantastic road is worse than a good driver on a lousy road IMHO

    "Attitude"?....Thank You.....see my post #41.
Attitude is a MASSIVE issue....far more important than the Speed speed speed ra ra ra, being peddled by , just let me say, the "Do Gooders".
Sure, speed is an issue....but as Brock said, its the "BY PRODUCT" of the real issue, which is "ATTITUDE".
In this regard, the ATTITUDE of "some" of our younger generation, is "**** You", "Couldn't give a ****" etc etc.....they simply think only of themselves...."I'll do what I want" etc.....so, I'll give you something to think about.....I say that the parents of some of these Arseholes", need to take a lot of the blame...Yes.....PARENTS....they need to take more responsibility for their children.
I ain't no "saint"...Loved my fast cars, my V8s, liked a drink (still do)..BUT, in the right place.....and I taught my kids the same...
    Cheers, Pickles.

Just to any new members if your going to include swearing in a post please just type the word and let the filter do its job

No need to self moderate. if its bad the filter will block it, if you self moderate it can be seen as trying to dodge the filter
