For a professional $2k gets you very little in training these days and you generally have to travel for specialist courses.

It would not be better compare the allowances given to all the professionals involved in research to the allowances that the politicians get.

Hi Arthur, I was not commenting on travel allowances for doctors. But rather the mealcard system thay have. Doctors pay for all meals (plus drinks with meals) from pre-tax income. They have now been forced to use a credit-card like system to pay for their meals, however they resisted that as long as they could. It wasn't until some doctors got caught having $10000 lunches amongst a group of them and all claiming the entire invoice amount that the card was forced on them. It doesn't stop the expensive lunches, but it does mean they can only claim them once.

And hitting everyone because a few people are rotting the system is just not a smart way to operate. You end up causing more damage than what you were trying to fix.

FBT exemption is the issue you point out and it is really public or state health employees not just the doctors in that sector. I agree it is an issue but it is nothing to do with self education expense.
