Heading up that way shortly, for a little red-dirt therapy. Is it worth throwing a line in the Cooper? Or at Coongi lakes? What sort of fish, any tips on bait/lures?

Yellow Belly and Eel Tailed Catfish. Both good eating. Prawns and earth worms work. Water is a bit opaque for lures, but worth a try.
I'm not a fishermanbut certain times of year/month are better than others.

Don't think fishing in Coongie Lake is allowed, now that it's Coongie Lake NP.
Or should I say it's not allowed if you get caught.

Where is Coongie Lake? I go through the cooper basin area often enough but haven't heard of Coongie and cant find it on my maps....cheers Dennis
found it myself, its further into SA than I was looking
Yep, up north from Innamincka.
I've been as far as Innamincka before but not up to the lakes. I fish for trout in the Alpine National Park, wouldn't have thought NP status would rule out fishing. Will soon see if there are any signs I guess.
You can fish Cooper Creek & Diamantina River .
Species in the area include Lake Eyre Golden Perch ( Callop ) ,Cooper Creek
Catfish , Barcoo Grunter ,Welch's Grunter & Yabbies. There are size &/or bag limits that apply & also limits on the permitted devices that can be used.
Best to go on line to PIRSA. Fisheries where you can get all the rules ®s.
Beware just because its in the middle of nowhere don't think you can do as you wish as FISHERIES do patrol this area & are due to do so in the next few weeks. They have made quite a few busts up there inc one VICTORIAN mob who were fined over $30,000.00 &lost all their gear.
Jeff
I think you would catch a lot of tortoises, which would be unfortunate.
When I saw how many there were I didn't bother fishing.
