The Coachs' opinion.... I have thought for a few years our batsmens techniques were being eroded by T20 & 50 over cricket. Bob

COACH Darren Lehmann has read the riot act to Australia's players after a batting debacle in the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

The new coach accused eight of the 10 who feebly perished with throwing their wickets away after Australia was bowled out for just 128 in only 53.3 overs during the second day.
He claimed batsmen were playing one-day shots instead of putting real value on their wickets and building an innings.
“We showed glimpses but we’ve got to bat better. It was more one-day batting than Test match batting,” said Lehmann, who claimed his dressing down of the players would stay in-house.
A lion-hearted performance by Peter Siddle late in the day gave him 3-4 in five overs and left England 3-31 in its second innings at stumps but England’s overall lead is an imposing 264.
The best successful run chase at Lord’s is 1-344 by the West Indies in 1984 when they were a superpower.
There is nothing remotely super about Australia’s batting, which also collapsed to 9-117 during the first Test at Nottingham before Ashton Agar’s brilliant 98 on debut papered over those cracks.

“It’s certainly disappointing as a coach,” Lehmann said.
“As long as we’re always trying to learn and get it right, and we do have to get it right quickly, there is no doubt about that. We’re not shying away from that issue at all.
“We know we have to improve our batting over periods of time and bat a lot more than 55 overs.
“We believe the plans are right. Our shot selection was poor today, simple as that. I think eight out of the 10 were self inflicted to be perfectly honest.”
England destroyer Graeme Swann, who claimed his best Ashes figures of 5-44, was amazed at the position England found itself in after just two days.
“Turning up 7-289 was probably a bit under par, we realised we had to get as many as possible in the first innings because we felt it was about a 400 pitch,” Swann said.
“To get 350 we reluctantly accepted and to then bowl Australia out so far behind that, you would have bitten your arm off at the start of the day.”
Not only did Australia make a mess of its batting on the second day, it also burnt its umpire referrals as well.
Lehmann blamed Chris Rogers for encouraging Shane Watson to review his decision.
“That’s just the way it goes sometimes, and then he should have used one on himself but he probably didn’t want to after wasting one,” said Lehmann.
“As long as they learn from it that’s the thing. We’ve certainly got the bowling side of it right with the referrals. Now the batters have to get that right.”
Rogers missed a waist high full toss from Graeme Swann to be leg before wicket. Replays showed it going down the leg side.

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Lehmann has good reason to be upset. Much of the batting decision making has been poor, some of it comical almost.

The bowlers have mostly been pretty good, and uncovered Pietersen's total lack of current form in both innings. The five-for by Harris was well deserved - I personally like Harris as he's a worker and not a show pony only worried about tattoos, hairdos and sponsorship deals.

I could only stay awake until tea last night, I might have to put the coffee machine on and get through to stumps if it carries on with the same level of drama tonight.

Any credit for some high quality bowling? Swann was awesome, well, 4 out of his 5 anyway!

Swann was good, as was Broad. Strange how Anderson was the one that didn't look on top of his game today. The little tail end slog between Swann and Broad was good to watch too.

No doubt that England were on top today.

Now that you mention it, the TV was on downstairs after I went to bed and I have vague memories of hearing more wickets. No wonder I was having such bad nightmares!

Isnt it funny, When Ponting was captain and he had scored as little runs in an ashes series as clarke has the aussie media would have called for his head... Havent read a bad comment about clarke...

Time for the captain to stand up.

    Cheers Ean
