    Ball Joint Failure?

I came across a Prado yesterday with a collapsed LH front wheel and assembly, apparently no warning it just all fell away. The tilt tray operator said it was a collapsed ball joint and he had seen this occurrence about 30 times this year.

This was new to me and I now wonder if this is a fail point with LandRover, maybe someone with experience with this matter could advise?

    Cheers,

It is a potential failure point in any car, they should be inspected at every service for any movement

Unlikely there would be a failure without some warning signs. Possibly had a front end knock and ignored it.....paid the penalty. Modern encapsulated balljoints should operate without any movement whatsover, unlike the older style balljoints, which generally have a manufacturer tolerance. ( and a grease nipple )

Exactly why I will never buy a 4x4 with independent suspension.

( I have also had an A-Frame ball joint fail (and let go) on my 90 without notice)

thats what I would have thought too, before above happened to me, Also it beggars belief the number of Front props on D2's that let go without warning .

Toyota tie rod ends (kinda like an IFS ball joint) have been falling apart regularly since Jesus played for Nazareth under 13s...

A TRE is easy to fix with some fencing wire though so I guess it doesnt really count as a failure!

Wasnt there some photos on here of a playdo or somesuch having a lie down in a sand pit with busted ball joints and ejected driveshaft just a few months ago????
