Thanks. Displaying my absolute ignorance I know, but I have a pair of 1W handhelds that seem to have a useable distance only slightly larger than a pair of yogurt pots and string. :D

Is it right that some Aldi products are just versions of products made by major manufacturers and sold under other brand names?

My Aldi 9500lb winch ($399) looks exactly like a noted brand X ($900+). It's had a fair bit of use one way or 'tuther although mainly used for pulling logs out of places I can't get the tractor so probably only pulling 900-1200kg but it's still a fair drag along the ground. It's pulled the "Cruiser ute it's on effortlessly in loose sand when I was forced off a track by an 80kph ******!

Given that the market for UHF cb radios is basically only Aus and NZ it's pretty hard to see Aldi building their own.

Really? They dont use them anywhere else? I didnt know that. I wonder why not? Do the yanks still use AM?

(Ive got a stack of AM CB radios down the shed from past installations back in my youth before they invented the internet for talking to strangers)

5W is the statutory maximum, and, given a halfway decent antenna/installation, will give good reception to the horizon, which is as far as you will get with any power on this frequency (perhaps a little more by forward scatter). I regularly receive transmissions from the fire brigade at Cook's Gap over a hundred kilometres from here - we are both on hills (and have base station antennae), so the horizon is a long way away.

There used to be an ultralight pilot who regularly used our channel while flying, and we got good reception from him at similar distances. I have, on occasion, got good two way communications using a 1W handheld at close to 100km from a light aircraft to a ground station.

The only reason for using higher power than 5w is to talk over the top of other CB users.

I had a uniden 5w in my hilux, and one memorable night I was driving home up the mountains and from about lawson all the way to Katoomba I was talking to a bloke who was in his shack at tin city on stockton beach.

I realise it was a peculiar set of atmospheric conditions that allowed it, (skip from the ionosphere or something like that), but it was pretty nifty.

My UHF in the car is generally only for car to car communications on trips so have never had a problem being limited to 5watts. A half decent anteanna and it seems to be all I need.
