Melbourne: Help buying a RR LPG needed !

    Hi all,

Tomorrow morning I'll be flying from SYD to Melbourne to see (and, if nothing obvious is wrong, to buy) a RR classic with LPG. I'm new to the LPG thing, the V8, the auto gearbox and the Borg-Warner transfer case.

My defender project is taking me ages to finish (it was going to be four weekends, and clocked almost two years so far) so I need a car.

Is there something special to look at regarding the LPG system (apart from checking that it has a compliance plate) ? And the gearbox ?

If someone is on leave, or retired, and is willing to help to look at the car, I'm more than happy to discuss about a compensation for that.

    Cheers,

    Carlos

If its already running on lpg and running correctly (engine condition reliant of course) then its just a matter of checking the tank test date and as you already mentioned check the compliance plate.
Is this vehicle for transport or to use for spares for the county ?, also where is the RR located.

    Hi,

The range is listed in Gumtree, it is located in Seville, but the seller will be driving it to the airport tomorrow. It is a 1995 RR.

I discovered that the car was a write-off in 2004 after a collision. The seller (apparently) bought it without knowing its past from a "reputable" yard.

    Thank you for the advice

If it's the blue one listed in Seville, the boot is empty of gas tanks so there will be one or two gas tanks under the back. They will have their own ID plates and the test dates (month/year) should be significantly less than 10 years ago. The compliance plate under the bonnet is important too but can be fitted to non-new gas tanks, or the tanks have been tested since the plate was fitted. Also make sure the petrol system is all working before you run out of gas. The petrol tank will likely be quite small and tucked behind the RH rear wheel. You can't replace its pump without dropping the tank right out.

Lastly don't drive it hard until you are sure that 1 step colder than stock spark plugs have been fitted. Put in a set of Bosch WR7DC+ ones to ensure they are right. If you have a timing light you can take adjust the timing to 10 degrees BTDC and it should run well, all other things being OK.

    Hi,

Yes, it is the blue one listed in Seville. LPG tank is under the floor, and there is an small petrol tank in the rear RH panel.

It was listed as "economical write-off", in March 2004. The seller bought it in September 2004. We have no idea about which parts might have involved in the crash/repair.

I'm a bit worried after seeing some LPG backfire videos on youtube :-)

After talking with Pete (Pierre) he might be taking a look at the car today, especially at the LPG bits (fingers crossed here). Many thanks to him in advance

Back in Woy Woy with the range. Mechanically sound (ad advised by Pete) and a bit rough inside (time to shop around for some bits). NSW rego next week, I hope.
