Thread: Anybody used "Western Oils"

I have used Gulf Western oils without a problem, Australian owned and operated, most of the big mining companies use it for their machinery, outsell Penrite, cheaper because they don't pay royalties to overseas oil companies like most do, never heard of western oils, check out web-sites for company info, regards Frank.

back in 2002 I went to TAFE and one of the module we did was Condition Monitoring and Oil. (I did this because of my background in avation)

The guy doing the course said that prety much all oil is to the same standard, and if it meets or exceeds GM xyz or Ford xzy or such, then its going to be pretty good.

Also, if you look a the lable, there will be a spec code thats SG and CF. The S and the C, S=shop C=Commercial and the second letter is the latest version. So, if you 15 year old disco says use oil to a grade equivilent to SE and you are putting oil in that is SG, then it is a greater spec than required.

Sure Oils aint Oils but thats where you have to make a judgement and what you can afford.

Also, how are you going to monitor?
Unless you take a sample and send of to a lab for testing, its pretty difficult to assess it. Then you need to give them a virgin sample of the oil that you put in and monitor it over time and a number of changes. If you change from Brand X to Brand Y, there will still be some residue of Brand X in there so it will take a while to flush / dilute it out.

When choosing oil in teh past, I have always looked at the spec in the manual required, cross refer to the temperature range and then see what they have.

I use Gulf Western in my TD5 for the last 5 years changing about every 10,000km and both filters as well

Same here, usually get a 10ltr drum for under $50 and sometimes $39 .

An oil thread I'm waiting for rick to chime in any time now

just picked up 20 litres for 88 bucks, semi synthetic 10w40..... and next time ill pay less because you can refill your bottle........but 88 bucks for 20 litres aint bad in my eyes Mate Mechanic says their good.
Western Oil
Now every service costs me approximately 42 dollars all up (inc oil filter, as air filter i do as i see fit)

yeh well "western oil" is locally blended and they guarantee their product.....also aussie company. Just was wondering if others have experienced it, o well im jumping in the deep end, doing some rough driving and servicing max 5000km atm..... normally 7-10k. Figure ill watch how engine behaves and see if anything better/worse....and judge it by that..... i think it will be ok if mechanics using it around the place.

Western Oils is a company name (same as XYZ Oil distributors) which was a bulk oil supplier. Can not remember which brand they originally use to distribute, but they then took on a Gulf Western distribution rights / franchise.
I have started to use their oils for the past year in a TD5 so far without issues.
