    Mini diggers

Thinking about buying myself a used mini digger to do some work around the place but I don't know to much about them from an ownership perspective. What things should I look out for, what questions should I ask and what are the maintenance requirements.
    Thanks

check all bushes in pivot points etc, grab the arms from near the mounting plate where the bucket goes and lift and look for excess movement. Use all the rams and look for movement in the bushes/ pivots. extend the rams and make sure they aren;t bent.
check rams for leaks etc, normally just a seal kit, things like hyd. pump and wheel drive motors are gonna get exxy so put it under some load and check for noises / abnormal leaks etc.

service intervals are normally every 100H or so.

most get a hard time all day every day, and usually by people that dont actually own the machine!
i guess if your just going to be using it at home it won;t be too stressed.

Personally, I wouldn't buy one that has been in the hire industry. By the time they flogged off, that's exactly what they are - flogged.

I work for a Hire company by the way and see first hand what goes to auction - most is not pretty.

Oh, and if you're looking at one, apart form the points already mentioned, check the drive sprockets, drive chinas and tyres. All of these get chewed out on a regular basis.

The green ones have greaseable pins, and parallel bucket lift.
The red ones do not. Most likely not an issue for part time home use
    just good to know.

You need to think about what you are mostly going to use it for. Skid steer loader are much faster across the ground than a tracked excavator. If you are digging holes the size of a bucket and not moving the soil far then go the excavator, if your leveling and moving soil around then go the skid steer loader.

10 hrs on a machine is like 1000 km on engine running time/wear on a road vehicle. I got a 1.5 ton excavator with about 2200 hrs (250 000 km), so far so good 300 hrs later I am servicing a the arm ram for a leak that got bad enough to do something about. Rubber tracks can cost a bit so check their condition if you are going the excavator.

As well as all that, hydrostatic systems don't like ANYTHING in them. Some machines regardless of hours can suffer from bits of castings floating around in the system and scoring spool valves and blocking small holes in the system. These particles usually continue to circulate around and around and don't get filtered out. Check for any un controlled movement in the controls at high and low engine rpm's. Considerable jerky-ness from the controls is not good = $$$.
For example if you move the dipper smoothly in and out but it moves rougher when moved up and down, leave the machine where it is and tell them you'll think about it.

    Just my 2 cents.
    Cheers,
    Brian.
