    Credit Card Hacked

Had my credit card hacked the other day. 2k went to India, the bank then charged me $57 for international money transaction and $400 was spent on a plane flight with Tiger Airways.

Contacted the bank and they cancelled the card.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    Been there twice...

Waiting for my replacement card to arrive. Bank (Credit Union) contacted me...and queried a $400+ bill to paypal in the US of A. ! Turns out they'd already spotted a few $2.00 or so 'attempts' and there's another $165 transaction that they are disputing with VISA.

I suspect mine is the result of visiting and buying from an Indian company.... this happened some years ago, about 4 to 6 weeks after purchasing from them. Same time - frame this time around.

I've used pre-paid VISA cards before, and apart from the annoyance of having to purchase/load the correct amount, they're as safe as you'll ever get.

Check your statements EVERY time you get one, which should be monthly...

Or on-line if you have that facility.

A couple of months ago the NAB called me to say they spotted a dodgy $5 international transaction and cancelled the card straight away. Apparently they try these small ones to see if it works, then go to town on your card.

Was very impressed by their vigilance, but it sucks when it's on a Friday and you have no cash for the weekend.

    Sorry to hear about this...

Problem is, it will only get worse as more people are forced onto Paywave. IMHO this is the biggest threat to your bank-accounts security since cards were issued.

    how so?

as long as the bank is protecting you, its an annoyance rather than a threat.

I have two debit cards. One for local transactions, one for internet purchases. I only leave $ 2 in the internet one, until I need to buy something. I keep a good eye on both cards, haven't been ripped off yet , doesn't mean I wont. I remain vigilant, Bob

Lou. I have no idea. I don't use it very often as I am a cash person. All my internet purchasers are with paypal where available, which is linked to my bank acc, not credit card. Most times when I do use it for online or phone purchasing, it is usually with reputable companies. I have never purchased anything os with the card apart from Landrover parts from the UK

I only have a 3K limit on my card for this very reason, even though the bank on many occasions have offered to raise it. Even when I reported it on the phone, whilst in the process of cancelling it, they said the replacement could have a much higher limit if needed. No thanks.

presumably the bank or the police will be doing a trace on the tiger airways flight that would all presumably be traced back to a passport
