Given the bs of what has happened in SA recently I can see why many are once again looking at buying a good genie.
I bought a Honda 6.8KVA generator about 12 - 14 years ago and has to be one of the best investments I've made.
We have had quite a few long blackouts, including one that lasted just under 3 days and the generator proved a god send.
During long blackouts, because the gen motor is quite loud, I run the generator during daylight hours up till about 9PM and then use a couple of inverters to run basics during the night.
I have never powered any of the air conditioners off it but it keeps all our fridges cold and most of our other essentials working.
Plus I use a 60 amp battery charger to recharge my bank of batteries during the day and then use them run the inverters overnight,mostly for lighting, cooking and entertainment systems. But the fridges are off once the generator is off.
During the last blackout, I had one of the small Hondas here so I lent it to a neighbour and that kept them going as well.
The only thing I do not have on the large gen is the protection of the RVD that was installed in the smaller Honda ( like in the pictures of the Subaru R1700i ).
As the large gen was in a shed separate from the house, the long extension leads out in the wet were a bit of a worry!
Honda have an Australia wide dealer network of power equipment specialists ... 450+ dealers ... Yamaha only have motorcycle or outboard dealers ... many a tale of woe have I heard from Yamaha genie owners who end up at a M/C or O/B dealership in an attempt to get a gen' repair or parts ... The Yammies seem to be good quality, but the after sales support network sucks.
