Namibia self drive safari, any one done one?

G'day Frank,
Yes, give her a kick in the bum. The photos you guys are sending back brilliant. You look like you are having the best time. On a trip of that magnitude, there will always be mechanical failures, lets hope they are all minor.
Be safe over there, I'm looking forward to some campfire chats when you get back and more photos and stories in the meantime.

Start in Joburg, head up Noth to Botswana via martinsdrift and further north to nata pans, then kasane into Chobe, linyanti, savuti, then through to moremi, 3rd bride and xakanaxa down to central kalahari via Maun (don't go when it's donkey mating season) and then up to the caprivi strip into namibia, work your way all the way down to south africa via the norther cape, and hell if time permits all the way down to cape town and back via the dragensburg to joburg.
You will not return to australia the same man.

Thanks, fellas, some great posts here, & good advice. I think a safari drive experience in Namibia to get the feel of it, then who knows? A lot will depend on the political situation in the area at the time, but certainly something to think about cheers, Bob

my parents took my and my siblings on a trip like that, shipped the 110 over, bought a camper trailer, spent 6 months travelling southern africa. best thing ever. i was 12 then and have been back almost every year since, its an addiction.

Namibia and Botswana is very stable, Botswana mainly due to the discovery of diamonds after the pomps (no hard feelings) left. Namibia is even better, i would rate them as safe as SA if not safer. Thats my opinion. Zim is in a different world....

If there is plenty of interest in a joint trip.... Well a mate of mine may very well be interested to lead the pack (self drive) with out it costing an arm and a leg.

Does your mate have cars and gear as well?

We are looking in to this....after Bob posted been wanting to go to Africa for years was going to go last year but ended up switching plans and going to the cape instead

Namibia is easy done on your own, no need for these safari-type expeditions. It's easy to rent a 4x4 camper and drive around the country.

Head to the SA Overland Forum (The Southern African Overland Forum) and read up on the trip reports to get an idea of regions, costs, etc.
