If you want a toy then definitely reconsider D1s because they're cheap, very capable and you would have plenty of spare money to spend on extras. For example, the rear diff lock in my D1 means it would cruise over any stuff such as in the video. Fitting diff locks will also make it more capable than relying on traction control.

Your answer being Any 4wd with open diffs is realy a 2wd with out LSD or diff locks they drive on one wheel rear and front , Enter a rear lsd as most inferior 4wd.s will have to compensate poor off road performance ;) and you now have 3 wheel drive when you lose traction on the rear , 2 wheels on the rear and 1 wheel on the front . Enter f/r diff locks and you have a 4wd :cool:
The d2 is a good choice as long as it has the centre diff lock with the advantage of traction control .
As your vid shows you could see how most 4wd,s come un stuck even the nissan that are supposed to have realy good Lsd diffs:angel:
Started watching that vid, and then realised it proves very little... Being on rollers with no resistance is like being on ice... Very little moves on ice without the aid of studs! As said before, anything with a LSD (limited Slip Diff) or traction control will drive off those rollers.. Anything with open diffs won't. An earlier Land Rover comes with an open diff front and rear. Get it cross axled (2 opposite wheels off the ground or with minimal grip) and it will stop (even with the center diff in the transfer box locked).. Lite application of the brake whilst the wheels are spinning will slow the spinning wheels and force drive to the wheels that are on the ground (similar to traction control). If you buy an earlier Disco with a front or rear locker it'll go most places. If you by a Disco 2 with traction control it'll go most places that its bumpers and cills will allow... which is a lot more than your Subaru! Hope my 2c worth helped!

Thanks for your responses. I know my Subaru is only a soft roader and nothing compared to a real 4WD in terms of the stuff you all are talking about, but I was only focusing on the traction system, and some of your responses clarified things for me, "do not buy anything with an open differential if it doesn't have am assisting aid like LSD, TC, Lockers".
My mind is at peace.
While open diffs do have limitations, it won't often be that both axles will be in such a predicament. Also, some Traction Control Systems require a bit of a push (ie, throttle) to activate the system. Most jungles and deserts were explored with old Land Rovers with open diffs.Quote:

Dont stress mate open diffs are fine but do have their limits , If you intend on hard core stuff ect 36" tyres or mixing it with the die hards yes diff locks are the go , Id say buy what car tickles your fancy and then if you find your car wanting or needing go the diff locks . There are a lot of d/lock manufacturers now so you have plenty of choice of which brand you getQuote:
