Don't worrie Vlad old son just had a some problems getting on line, will be changing the geographic location tonight.... :wink:Originally posted by VladTepes
Oh, and Medic455 - time to change your geographic location in your profile matey.
12 May 2001 - ACV Corio Bay open for inspection
Open for inspection in the bay it was named after, Australian Customs Vessel Corio Bay will be in Geelong for an open day this Saturday, 12 May, the Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Chris Ellison, announced today.
The Corio Bay, which is carrying out a regular patrol in the area, will be open to the public from 10am to 3pm. The vessel will be moored at Cunningham Pier, Corio Bay, Geelong.
"Maintaining a strong coastal surveillance network is a priority for Australians. I'm proud to say that one of the keys to this defence is the fleet of eight new bay class customs boats designed and built by Australian shipwright, Austal Ships Pty Ltd," Senator Ellison said.
"The Corio Bay and her sister ships enable Customs to deliver enhanced surveillance and response capabilities around Australia's 37,000 kilometre coastline, including waters off Victoria, protecting Australia from illegal activities including people smuggling and unauthorised fishing."
Senator Ellison said the Howard Government had invested some $58 million in the new fleet that contains start-of-the-art communications, navigation and mechanical equipment, enabling vessels to remain at sea for up to 28 days at a time.
As well as carrying out Customs duties, Corio Bay carries out coastal and off-shore activities on behalf of other Commonwealth and State agencies including the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Environment Australia and Federal and State police forces.
"These visits give the local community rare insight into the capability of Customs patrol vessels used to protect Australian shores from illegal immigrants and drug importation," he said.
The open day is also a chance for people to become familiar with Customs Watch, ¾ a program that encourages the community to report unusual or suspicious land, sea or air activities. A Customs Watch caravan will also be on display at the pier on Saturday.
"We find that people in local areas are most familiar with their own environment and therefore the best judge of anything out of the ordinary," Senator Ellison said.
"Community information can be the key to preventing smuggling of drugs, wildlife or flora and I would encourage people to report anything unusual in the area by phoning our 24-hour freecall number 1800 06 1800."

Speaking of boats, and I don't want to alarm anyone un-neccesarily, but Ferno was last seen waterproofing the Land Rover tub while Mrs Ferno was out rounding up two cows, two sheep, two lizards, two spiders, two.....
Perhaps they know something we don't. 8O
Time for a longer snorkel perhaps :?:
