    bee keeping 101

Just spent the morning helping a mate rob his hive, he's been keeping for about 25 years, fascinating stuff. Going to the Bowls club tomorrow to discuss joining the local Bee Keeping club, & get set up. Purely business of course. I have a large jar of melaluka honey, & a jar of honeycombe , in the fridge. I got the hands dirty , & earned them, but at least when you get the hands dirty here, you can lick them clean. You know, life is good, Bob

Nice. I like bees and bee spit myself. Would like to find someone that could show me one end of the hive from the other. I've always thought I may like to keep bees.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

Always been keen on the idea myself. Unfortunately I'll have to settle for a local producer to bring his hives out to the farm for a stint. At least we get a small sample at harvest time.

My fave is Buzz Honey's "bush mallee".

From what I gather, the bees do most of the work. There are some regulations, like you must register, but that is to do with disease spread. If I get any info that might interest you, I'll pass it on. From where I stand, I think the most difficult part will be remembering their names. Bob

    Bee Keen

Differentiating them could be difficult.... I only have three kids (B&G)& I get their names wrong...you could try branding them... Life as a bee would be so ho hummm, but the again it does go buzzing by... DOH

I have a mate who has native bees and they are cool little things. No sting either... Honey is rich and runny.. Great for the environment as well.

If I had more than a small suburban block, I recon I would definitely get some native bees

    Well,

    I'll bee blowed!

I do keep a few bees, and never tire of watching them beevering away.

Now is the time of year to pick up a swarm if you want to start, either catch your own ( really easy, and what could possibly go wrong?) or get a beekeeper to get one for you. We often do not want to keep all the swarms we catch for one reason or another.

Just always bee calm, and never ever show fear.

    Mmmhm,

Look them in the eye, eh?

That could be tricky, as they have five! Two large compound eyes on the side, and three simple eyes on the top of their hairy little heads!

And apparently, not only can they see the full range of colours - extra good for finding juicy different flowers, but allegedly they can see UV spectrum as well.

    Clever little beesties aren't they?

They have hair? how do you get them to sit still long enough to cut it? Bob
