Try owning a beagle. They sniff stuff about 30 cm down and then he convinces the shepherd to dig it out. If you own an old house it is amazing what they come up with. One day they dug up this muddy old tennis ball. I thought it was an old hand grenade at first. I wasn't too keen when they brought it to me. I find I have to bury chicken wire around the fence to stop the little bugger digging out.
