    Sandpit

    Hello Laney

I will back up what Chucaro wrote about the sandpit.

My wife, Leeann is currently reading Training Dogs the Aussie Way: A practical Guide for Dog Owners. By Danny and Sylvia Wilson (2007) ISBN 978-0-9790956-1-0. Somewhere in the book they recommend building a sandpit for your dog to dig in. Supposedly digging holes is part of a dog's natural behaviour and if they have a sandpit they limit their digging to this area.

I will get Leeann to find the exact page number and the quote and I will post it up later.

The book is still available through Amazon Training Dogs the Aussie Way: Sylvia & Danny Wilson: 9780979095610: Amazon.com: Books or no doubt other retails too.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Throw sugar around on the grass. The ants will swarm, they'll bite the dog and the dog will stay off the grass. Eventually the ants will eat all the sugar and go away. Hopefully the dog will remember the lesson and be wary.
Or build a sandpit. Or both.

Something that perhaps it is not in that book is how to encourage a dog to go to the sand pit and keep it amused for few hours.
The trick is spread a hand full of blood and bone in the sand. You can bet that the bugger will go mad looking for the food

Surely the dog will read the book, make an informed decision and correct his way....

    Sandpit

    Hello All,

Here is the section from the book about sandpits and dogs...

    Entertainment

All dogs need entertainment, but puppies, like children, require even more than adult animals. A sandbox provides a wonderful place for a puppy to dig, romp, and even rest. It can dig in the sand to find cool relief on hot days and warmth in winter.

Stock the sandbox with several safe puppy toys, such as Kongs and Buster Cubes, both of which are made of durable material and can be filled with food that your puppy enjoys.

Extract from Wilson & Wilson (2007) Training Dogs the Aussie Way, StarJunction Books, Lakewood: Colorado. p. 55

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

The sandpit idea sounds like a good one.

Our new (6 month old) rottie has found a spot to dig, under the boat trailer. It doesn't bother anyone there, and I have let him go.

But, he gets told off if he starts to dig in the lawn. There is never more than a scratch in the lawn now.

As for their droppings in the holes, I have heard that it works for some, but not others. For one of our dogs, it didn't, but friends of ours that tried it, seemed to think that it did deter their dog.

As for the mesh under the lawn, it does work, and works well. Just remember to pull it up when the dog has given up digging in those spots, or it might rust out eventually, and break, leaving sharp edges.
