    Landrover Limited Warranty

    Greetings,

I wanted to get some info from the brains trust out there on the Landrover Limited Warranty.

Specifically I bought a 2010 Defender under three months ago from Landrover in Melbourne. The vehicle had 122,000km on the clock, always serviced by Landrover and due to high mileage the previous owner had her serviced every 5,000km. So I thought the vehicle would be in pretty good nick. On purchasing the vehicle I was given a Limited Warranty of 5,000km or 3 months.

I have within the 3 months noticed a driveline clunk at the rear of the vehicle and there is noticeable play in the driveshaft when the vehicle is not in gear and you manipulate it by hand. I have looked across the forums and seen various possible causes so I took the veihcle to Landrover Sydney for inspection. Their service department came back with a report saying the rear diff needed to be replaced due to excess driveline backlash. Melbourne Landrover will not repair under the Limited Warranty as they say it is not a road worthy issue.

Can anyone tell me if this view is correct or if I have a ground to push back and get the diff replaced under warranty? The replacement cost is around $4-5k with parts and labour!

So my next question would be if the Warranty is a no go what would the next best suggestion be? Maxi drives or ARB Lockers? Or is it worthwhile replacing rear flanges and seeing how I go to try and isolate the issue and reduce down the repair bill?

Any suggestions welcome and thanks for taking the time to read through the post.

    Cheers

Maxi is gone , MRT(and Hy-tuff axles) in Qld do their stuff now. The other option is to look at Ashcroft in the U.K Ashcroft Transmissions, they have an air locker, and all the gear to make the rear diff far stronger, axles, crown wheels, ratio changes, flanges, and their own designed air locker which is supposed to be stronger than ARB. 3rd option is to get a Salisbury 2nd hand, Hy-tuff axles and flanges and a Detroit from the U.S(about 1/2 cost of air locker) but that could be more expensive again as you may or may not need to rebuild the sals.

You will need to read the warranty paperwork but I am sure they are required to repair any major faults that occur within that time period . If for some reason view don't come to the party you could have the job done a lot cheaper than the 4 odd grand they quoted you.

In regard to Maxi's get intouch with MR Autos in Redcliffe Qld,(07)284 6688

I too would push to have that diff repaired under the limited warranty as it was quite possibly a pre existing condition, old car yard trick was banana skins or sawdust in the diff, that lasted about 21-30 days

    Consumer Affairs might help

I think that there are pretty clear guidelines from consumer affairs (Fair Trading) when dealing with used car warranties. I don't think the 3 month warranty is something they offer, rather something they are required to do. If it helps, I had a used Volvo that developed a throttle body issue within the three month period. It was not a roadworthy issue but they had to repair it at no small cost.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks Johnyrover I'll follow up through FT and add weight to my argument to have the diff replaced under warranty where possible. Landrover are reviewing the claim again after I challenged their initial decision and and I am awaiting their response.

There is a huge thread on Puma rear diffs and Ashcrofts replacement. Well worth a read: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130...ear-diffs.html
