Proposed war memorial destruction, this is disgusting

I think comments like "scum bags" and "low lifes" are a bit over the top.

These "scum bags" and "low lifes" are most likely people who have actually served there in the past (or even the current commanders there) and would not have made the decision lightly. You (me) may not like the decision but there is no need to be so disrespectful for those who made the decision and to whom you are attempting to change their minds.

The decision to destroy the memorial was made months ago and this is the second time it has popped up in the media.

For sure I agree it is not the greatest decision and I feel the memorial should be dismantled and brought back but abusing the decision makers is not the way to do it.

Sorry Garry but I would find it very hard to accept that someone who had served, would be happy desecrate a war memorial.

And as posted earlier, it’s not only Australia’s fallen that are being honoured.

Again, sorry mate but my comments stand as see no reason to be respectful to a person or persons responsible for such an act.

When low lifes knock over headstones in cemeteries, there is plenty of justified anger, I fail to see any difference in this act, except it is being validated by the authorities that be.

Am I right assuming there would all ready be a memorial in Australia.....

I haven't seen any of this story on TV as I rarely switch the news as you never get both sides of the story.

I am also assuming this wall would not have been an official one or approved by the government and that the diggers would have built it so they could reflect on the fallen ones while in country. If it was brought back it where would it be put? Is it normal to have different countries on the one memorial ( serious question)? Does it meet the requiremen?

Just observation BTW, as I can see both sides of the story......

Now if the diggers were smart they would gave got it back to Aus without fuss.......there is a large statue on It's way back that is heading to a museum that was built by diggers, I believe each rotation added a bit. I guess it depends which corps you belong too.....

I think I heard something on the radio about a memorial at the AWM here in Canberra. None the less I support the petition.

Signed.. it would be a crime to destroy this memorial.

They just need to get the RAEME lads involved as they managed to get this home

Well I suspect the commander on the ground who has responsibility for our current operations and organising the return of our forces is the person who is the person you are calling a low life and a scum bag - sorry but I cannot agree. For whatever reason they made that decision and in view of public comment, the decision may or may not get reversed.

I agree with the issue that you have raised but not your disrespectful description of the people who made the decision.

I think it is a bit beneath you.

Hi Garry and not sure where you got your info from but the guy in charge in Afghanistan is just following orders.

The orders came from Canberra, as was stated on the show I got the link to the partition from.

Whether it was some bureaucrat, high ranking army person or some over paid under brained politician is irrelevant, in MY OPINION, it does not alter the fact that this is the act of a low life.

I believe the problem lies thus,

The memorial is not nation specific, it records all the coalition dead from
all countries. I believe in discussions between all those said forces an agreement could not be reached as to who would take possesion of the monument and so the agreement to destroy it was reached.

Aussies have the access as its our responsibility to dismantle TARIN KWOT base.. I suggest that we propose to take and recover the monument and place it on display in the AWM as a tribute to ALL those lost. I would suggest that the other forces would likely prefer that to it being destroyed...


I do know that our forces would prefer to keep it but dont wish to start an international incident about it Im sure.

Perhaps another suggestion might be for us to retrieve the wall but ship it to New York, to the UN and get them to sort it out the controversy.

At least it would be saved!
