I was very surprised to hear what little powers the council have. I had always assumed that any serious attack on humans meant immediate destruction of the dog, but apparently not. That only happens when the dog is deemed uncontrollable by the attending council officer. Where that's not the case, there's just the whole useless "register as a dangerous dog" process instead.

Why do I say useless? Because it is only of any use if the owner actually abides by it.

And the non-reporting in the media was at my wife's request. As angry as we have felt at what this lowlife has done, our private life is more important than retribution and trial by media.

The media already thinks this guy is a dickhead anyway.......

Unfortunately things needed to be handled differently from the very beginning by the council.
One case I am involved at the moment, because of the way it was conducted means that the owner of the animal could face up to $1,650.00 in fines, at the minimum the dog will be declared and they will be forced to comply with the legislation. If not complied with we will remove the animal and impose more fines. All done with the powers given to local council. And this was just 1 bite, about 6 puncture wounds to someone's arse.
I am sorry sheerluck I think your case has been handled badly, just apply the pressure to council now so it doesn't happen to the next person.

And before you speak to them take the time to read the legislation they work under to fully arm yourself.

Here in NSW it is the companion animal act.

Her name is Lillee, but people call her 'killer'! She puts up a terrible fuss when anyone strange comes near the car.

I do have to warn them not to get too close as she could rip their arms off ----- starting with the end of the little finger up to the first knuckle!!! :p

Dave, very sorry to read this horrific account. I hope your wife is healing well and wish her all the best for continued recovery on all fronts. Also hope you and your kids are doing ok as well.

Not much I can add to what everyone has said other than it it is a sad affair on all fronts - you, your wife and kids, neighbours (not the :censored:) and of course the dogs.

Good luck with achieving a good outcome on the legal front.

PS very curious as to who this :censored: is. I would take great delight in assisting an early demise to his burgeoning fame and fortune - he deserves nothing. Have to see if I can work it out and spread the word...

Sure, a Jack Russell will bite and it will hurt, but its not likely to kill/maim.

A Jack Russell will only bite if it has not been trained properly, just because a dog is of smaller breed does not give owners an excuse not to train them properly.
What if that Jack attacked a baby? Same result as a big dog on an adult.

Oh fyi it has nothing to do with 'owning' a dog.

Its companionship, unconditional love and a real partnership you form with a dog. My suggestion, if that is your opinion, never ever own a dog. I'd say that is what the owner in this situation thought, just owning a dog because he wanted a dog.

Should a certain type of people be banned from reproducing because there is a higher risk of them committing crimes when they get older?
Pretty much all breeds originated from some type of attacking, protecting or killing. Up until the last 200 years when humans started to breed for looks, and comfort etc.
It is purely how they are trained, and looked after that makes a dog act the way it does. Unfortunately with the Pitt Bull, most morons who want a scary dog and bring them up in a really rough way have given the breed a bad name. The breed itself is amazing.

In this particular instance, it wasn't just that he wanted a dog, he wanted something with 'image'. Not a rescue mongrel, not a Spaniel, but something that would make him look big and tough.

To give you a bit more of a flavour of the guy, his wife is frightened stiff of dogs after being attacked a number of years ago. What kind of person would buy two Rottweilers, knowing that a)his wife was frightened of them, and b)she would have to look after them whilst he was away 2-3 weeks per month?

If you don't have the time, or a career that will not allow you the time, to devote to a dog (particularly high maintenance ones) you should not have them.
