Thread: Your other forms of transport?

My "main" at the moment is a 1996 Disco. In the process of replacing it with a 1995 Defender 130

I also have a Suzuki GSX1400 bike I tide, a Cx500 in pieces and the missus has a Jackaroo

We used to operate on one car (Discovery at the time) and a bike (CBR1000f at the time). The bike was my commuter to/from work rain, hail or shine. All was well with this system for several years until in Nov 2000 when a speeding, company owned commodore ran a red light in the city (Brisbane), he was late for a meeting. The bike was split in 2, the commodore was completely disintegrated in front of the wind screen, which I went through. Put me in hospital with a shattered pelvis, several broken ribs with internal bleeding and a broken leg. It was many operations later, 1 year off work and about 7 years of physo and rehab before I was considered recovered, I still get lower back pain at times from a slightly crocked pelvis, they say it never heals straight after being shattered like that. The back half of the bike was thrown on to the footpath where it struck a pedestrian causing series injury.

After nearly loosing the house, putting my young wife through hell, and experiencing several months of needing someone to help me go to the toilet and bath, I’ll never ride a bike on the road again – I consider myself lucky, most bike riders, motor or cycle don’t survive these ones, I won't forget the reaction of the paramedics, who were there within minutes, they were amazed I still had a leg - put it down to that framing infront of my leg that the CBR had, if I was on a small bike the leg would have been severed for sure. I was conscious and remember everything, and at the time wished I wasn't. Office workers who raced out to help were amazing.

Now we have a TDI Golf as the daily, my L322 (lots of airbags in both) and a train station at the end of the street. It takes longer than the bike did, but I get home in one piece. Usually the mrs drives to work early, I walk about 1km with the kids to school which happens to be right near the next station down the line. Spend some time with the kids, get some exercise then catch the train. I now go kite surfing for kicks.

I was 18 (1996) when I had my first serious accident in a car - it was Christmas day, driving from visiting the cathedral in Perth I was in my 1978 VW Golf which I only picked up from the panel shop a week earlier (brand new paint job, all clean and nice - was a $600 car dad bought me as a present for getting into Uni). I had the car full of family/friends going home for the BBQ. Dad was in the car in front which had a good lead on us so they didn't even know we were in an accident. About to cross an intersection at 70km/h when the older lady drove right across our path - no time to brake, no time to do anything - just boom! I also remember everything even saw the bonnet bend up and the windscreen fly out. I ended up with two operations, one on my hip and the other on my hand - till this day I get pins and needles in both and can predict the weather (18yrs later).

I ride the bike like everyone wants to kill me - but you're right - its very dangerous. I've had a spill on a scooter before at 60 and both my knees were like stakes seared to the bone after the way I landed. Now wear all the protective gear I can.

Funnily or luckily - none of the accidents i've been in have been my fault, so thats gotta count for something - always on the receiving end unfortunately.

Stays safe everyone - Christmas is coming as well - be extra careful on the roads - this is when the sunday drivers come out to play 'everyday' not just on weekends.

I'll add to that: after the 78 Golf, i bought a 76 Golf from the same dealer as well and in 98 that was written off (another encounter with a 70+ pensioner, nothing against them just a coincidence). I then bought an imported 1983 Honda CRX and thats how my obsession with CRX's started - at one stage owned 7 (culled it down a bit now). Still have the 1983 as its a very rare classic now, also have a genuine Mugen CRX racecar, a Supercharged CRX (blown motor) and a more kitted up 91 CRX (yes, kits are out - but I can't bring myself to spending 10K to take this kit off and respray). My GF has a CRX as well :P

Unfortunately my daily drive is a work supplied Commodore.

Have to wait to the weekend to get behind the wheel of the 101, or the Rangie, or the CBR1000F - if the bloody weather ever warms up...
