How long have you had the Rangie?
If you have had it a while and know it mechanically well and already spent money on rebuilding parts of it, then i'd say keep it.
Cheapest option is sill tanks. If you're worried about them, get them extra reinforced or a bash plate made, or go a small body lift to raise them.
Overall, i'd put in a 300tdi for range and simplicity.
I used to drive a Rangie classic, and I now drive a Disco TD5. If you need the load area, go the Disco. If not, chuck a diesel in the Rangie. TD5 is a good motor, but I always get the feeling that the TDi is more reliable, and easier to fix if it does go wrong.
I have both a RRC (85)5 sp LT77, on dual fuel and a 300TDI Disco1 auto,they both share the same chassis,so interchangeable parts, we both find the Disco a little narrow after the Range Rover, my friend has a 89 RRC with a 300TDI and an R380 gearbox (5spd) which he is very happy with, seeing that he has an 87 RRC auto dual fuel as well,he only bought RRC 300TDI as the price was so very cheap (owner had conversion done and wife didn't like the smell of diesel being put into the tank) :p
If my LT77 dies I will go Auto ZF 4 spd ;)
heres the question though, does the 300TDi mount straight into the RRC as a bolt in solution or do you need to weld in mounts?
Id happily do a 3.5 v8 to TDi conversion

AFAIK the D2 has identical interior in at least the front seat area to a RRC.
I have noticed that even the seat belt mount positions are to my eye identical. AFAIK they share the dashboard on soft dash RRC vs D1 and D2.
You can even put RRC front guards on a D1.

The D2 feels a bit claustraphobic for some reason in comparison to the RRC.
something I noted right away looking at Disco's for the wife.
The D1's I have driven do feel an awful lot like a well sorted RRC, the D2's not so much but I can understand why someone would feel the Disco was narrower.

There's a bit of work to be done to clean (derust), fit and plumb. I'm quite comfortable with figuring out the set-up but I'll know where to come if I need advice.
Interesting regarding the TDI/TD5 swap - but now I'll have an extra 450KM range, I'll sit back and enjoy the V8 music :)

Perhaps ditch the petrol sub tank and source some larger gas tanks as well. I know that you can certainly get better gas range out of one of them.
Not really practical, the only place you'll get a useful extra capacity of LPG is flat on the floor inside with a manifold tank, adds around 60 litres. Doing up the LPG system with oxygen sensor control can add 20% to your LPG range too. I do this to nearly every LR V8 I convert, it's worth doing.Quote:
