Cleaning Vinegar (Vin-a-Clean) is much better, and if in WA a lot cheaper,
$2 for 2 litres get it at Woolworth's.
Depending on the extent of rust it will remove the rust in hours if really bad maybe a couple of days, not weeks or months like molasses.
This excellent rust removal method was posted on this forum a while back but
    can't remember by who.

I just dump everything into a huge tub, all filthy rusty and greasy ... and take it upto the local platers. They do all the cleaning, prep and everything comes back so sparkly, clean and new you can barely recognise it. Include all your small brackets and anything that was plated originally years ago too. For about $60bucks they do all the hard work, and everything looks new again.

I pulled my the old car I'm tidying up to bits to rebuild the hydraulics and replace the engine (amongst a heap of other work). I ended up with this:

There's probably 30kgs of bits there... I left 'em all manky, just as they are in the piccies and dumped them at the local platers. I asked for "gold" colour (dunno why I should have stayed with nickel/silver as that's how they were plated originally). 'Cos I had so much stuff I was charged $80 for this, and this is what I picked up a few days later.

Look how clean and perfect all your fasteners come back:

This is the difference it makes when you start putting it all back together... Every thread being spotless makes life so easy too.

To avoid the "bling" factor, just get them plated without the colour.

    seeya,
    Shane L.

The bloke I asked said it probably wasn't worth doing that. Who did you take your stuff to???

Any tips on the type of platers we should seek out.

    Platers

    G'day Shane,

Those photographs certainly are convincing. I looked up the phone book and for a local based plater to ask a couple of questions.

On an earlier thread I had posted about some of my rusty sockets and spanners. Mick Marsh did suggest getting them re-plated. I did not think so many parts could be done for $80. Seeing the before and after photographs is quite impressive.

Trouble is one would need to start wearing white gloves to keep up appearances while working on one's Land Rover. Also one would need to start to cock one's little finger while drinking the cup of tea in the afternoon while eating their cucumber sandwiches.

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

I thought that all Citroen drivers and owners did that and wear little berets with red tasels.

Molasses works but its slow . When getting stuff plated I found it cheaper to clean everything and wire it up in bunches makes it Easier for the plater and. Cheaper because he has to do this anyway I just wish I could find a diagram to illustrate what I mean. And it also keeps bolts and nuts in sets instead of it just turning up in a box of bolts and nuts you have to sort out later
