I love my Hi-lift! I use it often mostly for jacking or pulling out small tree stumps, or recently fence posts.
I have a clevis hook attached to the bottom peg of mine which makes it easy to winch if you have some drag chain. It's not much fun but it's nice to know I can get out of just about any situation by pushing, pulling or lifting. I always pack lots of chains, shackles and straps to use with it! When I winch I kneel on one knee so I don't have to work above the jack but comfortably beside it with the handle pointing to the sky.

To all those who are saying "hope to never use it in anger", get the thing out when your not angry and learn how it works, assuming you haven't already. It is so much safer to do these things when there is no pressure or stress to get a task done, like recovery. Same goes for winches and straps I reckon. Obviously have someone who knows what's what show you too if at all possible

Very good advice. I'm going to do just that with my sons [ & future son-in law, ] as they would be most likely to be in the vehicle at some stage. I'm toying with the idea of making up a stabilising device using an old wooden step, & some galvanised wire & bottle screws. Bolt the jack to the step, if nothing else it will keep me busy for a while, Bob

If you don't mind me asking, is it 3/8 chain, & what length do find appropriate? Cheers, Bob

I have 2 lengths of 8mm chain and another short length like this one..... I also take 2 snatches, an expansion, equaliser, tree trunk protector and 5 shackles. I never use more than two shackles though because I use a roll of toilet paper or a magazine to join straps together to avoid a potential missile if a strap breaks..
I put the clevis lug onto the same D shackle that is holding the top of the jack, I use the end with the clevis claw to hold the tension of the chain I'm pulling so I can reset the jack when I need to. I'll put up some photos of how I do it later on if I can find the time
