I had to find my AGS no. recently to join the Telstra Alumni for their discounts for ex-staff.

I never needed it in OTC as I had an OTC staff no. (1454).

Our company is quite happy to let its employees get to 70 before having a little heart to heart with them - as long as they are being productive. My counterpart retired last year at 70 from the company (forcibly) - then started the following week at one of our opposition as he didn't want to retire (and is good friends with that companies owner) ..

We all knew where he was going - apart from senior management - they were quite shocked and ****ed off when they found out, I told them what did they expect? They knew he wasn't ready to do something else.

Chatting to him last week, he says he may drop back to 3 days a week soon or go and practice his golf swing a bit more.

Isn't that now illegal under our anti-discrimination laws.

Most of you are missing the salient points.

1- As now, you don't have to work to a set age. You can give up work any time you feel like it.

2 - You don't have to apply for an Age Pension. You can be a self-funded retiree.

A lot of things are illegal, but its how you put it across so it doesn't appear so.

When I said forcibly retired, he basically had no option - not because they would sack him, but just make his life miserable if he stayed at work - not through doing anything nasty - they got him by making him comply with company policy on computer use. They even offered to send him on several courses to become computer literate, but they knew he would pull the pin rather than go through that.

    There are always ways....

I " retired" 3 years ago, bored to buggery, working again, got a Defender on order for the long term hobby, Currently get 40 days leave, if I can work my way up to 160 days over the next 10 years it will suit me fine
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

And by 2035 most Aussies should be - with emphasis on most not all.

Average indigenous lifespan is only 69, so this will mean about half of Aborigines will die befor qualifying for the age pension.

The reality is what will happen is an even greater number of people who are physically unable to work being put on the disability pension, whch is already happening.

Superannuation won't be enough to help most people become self-funded retirees until the contributions are raised to 15%, as Keating originally proposed, but Howard prevented.

It must have stuck in the craw of many employers when they could no longer insist that an employee retire at a certain age. One major Australian corporation had a firm retirement age of 55. They also had an unwritten policy of not employing anybody over 45.
