    I can't believe that some people on this open forum, that can be accessed by anybody, actually discussed and left detailed instructions on the easiest way to hotwire a pre 68 Land Rover. .W.

    Anything that old can be hot-wired with the greatest of ease by anyone with an IQ above 50.

    Lucas even provided the piece of wire on the regulator box.

    I don't think it will affect the stolen vehicle stats one jot. Series Landies and other old Pommie cars don't rate with car thieves. If one was inadvertently stolen, I'm sure it would be returned with a donation and letter of sympathy left under the wiper.
    However John, could you provide similar information for a late model Bently please.

    no need to hot wire one...

    They have lucas electrics. A hot wire, being one of the 2 ways for wire to fail (either it goes open circuit and is cold or it shorts out and melts when it gets hot) is an unavoidable certainty.

    The method was published by Len Beadell in 1967 - and could be 'invented' by anyone with minimal mechanical knowledge at any time. It perhaps should be pointed out that door locks on Landrovers were optional into the seventies, and are a bit pointless on soft tops anyway.

    The electrical changes in 1967 made things slightly more difficult, mainly because the starter, being via the key switch, was also locked.

    If any 12 year old and up wanted this information they would get it easily, either here or elsewhere on the web. It's certainly not rocket science. If someone was targetting Land rovers, they would almost certainly already have this knowledge. I know I could start an early holden with some wire and a screwdriver and I'm not a dedicated car theif. (or an undedicated one either )

    Look at the bright side. If a marginally educated thief steals a series 1 Landy he doesn't need to wake you up. This is in contrast to your RRS/technorocket with an entire orchestra of bells and whistles in the security department. To steal that he has to break into your house, menace you with a suitable persuader until you hand over the keys/transponder/your finger complete with print etc and then drive off.

    Alternatively look at this as a golden opportunity to add protection to your series, such as a hidden switch on the fuel pump. That way the thief at least has to walk back to your house before he demands compensation, you might be awake enough to deal with him by then.

    Mine is so complicated to start I always leave the keys in it. I doubt anybody would have a clue how to start it let alone steal it.

    I wish I had a clue how to put it back to normal, there are 5 procedures to ignite the beast
