I am just waiting for some one to confirm this beyond doubt and I will order one.

Another question. If it can be done, are all the bits that don't get replaced reliable?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Now I have looked at other pumps like this

Land Rover Fuel Pump Discovery 2 TD5 WFX000280 VDO Brand | eBay (call this pump two)

The two pumps look nothing like each other.

I would assume that when I remove my pump that it would look like pump two.

Am I right that if I purchase pump one, that I would disassemble my pump and it would fit into it?

with "pump one" option you have to still pull the whole unit form the tank but rather then throw away a working sender unit you can just replace the broken pump itself. I had trouble with the main fuel hose as they are a very tight fit so i had to cut it to get it off but i just replaced with in tank efi fuel hose and some worm drive type clamps.
