I think many of us older people progressed from a Kombi to a 4wd.
My first car was a 1960 Beetle and I bought a Kombi with my dad in the early '70's. First of the 12 volt models (type2) and fitted it out as a camper, complete with 2 way fridge (gas/240 volt) and with a half pop up roof. I took it around Aus in '75 on my first honeymoon :(
We had that for nearly 10 years and sold it for twice as much as we bought it for.
I helped a mate in Melbourne put windows in the side of his VW van in 1972 and we made the openings just a tad too small. Boy! Did that make it hard pulling the rubbers around the windows but after much lubrication (down the throat kind) we got the job done.
We had great fun, us and our 2 kids and him and his wife going to the different places they wanted to show us new arrivals to Oz.

Landy nut or not - I would give my eye teeth for a split screen Kombi
If you want even a pretty ordinary one it will cost you a hell of a lot more than eye teeth, more like your first born;)
